Windsor Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1924-2000

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Windsor from 1924-2000, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Access and download the location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.

Notes:

  • East Windsor, Sandwich, and Walkerville were amalgamated into the city of Windsor in 1935, and all streets in the area were renumbered at that time. I have approximated the locations based on the current numbering system as closely as possible using the “reverse lookup” section of the 1935 city directory as a reference. I am still working on deciphering a few addresses.

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • Dominion
  • IGA
  • Loblaws
  • M&P
  • Red & White
  • Steinberg/Miracle Mart
  • Zehrs

As I remember, I think by 1976 there was a store in Windsor on South Ouellette Street named Gordon’s, which was a sister brand to Zehrs/Loblaws.

Just checked my directory page images and I have a listing for a Gordon’s at 3033 Forest Glade Drive, which seems to be a shopping center in the middle of a residential subdivision. Could that be the one?

3150 Howard Ave, closed as an A&P location in the mid-90s. It was replaced by a Chapters (now Indigo location, as well as a 2nd exterior revolving retailer). The current Metro location opened in 2017 (address: 3100 Howard Ave) in the former Zellers (and briefly Target location) at the south end of Devonshire Mall, and not facing east like the former Miracle Food Mart/A&P location.

As an edit to my comment above, I should have said: “and not facing west like the former Miracle Food Mart/A&P location.”
