Austin Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1924-1986

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Austin between 1924 and 1986 (plus 2021), compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Notes:

  • H-E-B (H.E. Butt) was the Piggly Wiggly franchisee in Austin before converting the stores to its own name.
  • A&P departed Austin about 1952, but returned in 1965-1966, opening five new stores and then leaving for good in 1975.
  • The final A&P store of the chain’s “first wave” in the city (on North Lamar Boulevard) became the first Whole Foods store in 1980.
  • I assume the Skaggs Alpha Beta stores later became Albertsons. I’ll have to do more research. In fact I hope to eventually fill in lots of holes between 1986 and the present.
