Austin Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1924-1986

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Austin between 1924 and 1986 (plus 2021), compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

  • H-E-B (H.E. Butt) was the Piggly Wiggly franchisee in Austin before converting the stores to its own name.
  • A&P departed Austin about 1952, but returned in 1965-1966, opening five new stores and then leaving for good in 1975.
  • The final A&P store of the chain’s “first wave” in the city (on North Lamar Boulevard) became the first Whole Foods store in 1980.
  • I assume the Skaggs Alpha Beta stores later became Albertsons. I’ll have to do more research. In fact I hope to eventually fill in lots of holes between 1986 and the present.
