Montgomery Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-2015

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Montgomery between 1925 and 1959, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Note:

  • Many streets in Montgomery were renumbered between 1950 and 1955. I have tried to sync to current addresses as closely as possible, and i think I’ve done a pretty good job, but you should consider any street numbers for locations prior to 1955 to be estimates.
  • Bruno’s was notorious for switching back and forth between different store banners. The name reflected here may not always be the one that was actually in use at the time. Some of these units may have also briefly fallen under the Southern Family Markets banner in the late 2000s.

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • Big Bear
  • Bruno’s/Foodmax/Food Fair/Food World
  • Calhouns/Super Foods
  • Delchamps
  • H.G. Hill
  • IGA
  • Piggly Wiggly
  • Publix
  • Winn-Dixie/Kwik-Chek/Save-Rite/Winn & Lovett

Wasn’t there supposed to be an Albertsons in Montgomery? We went there in 1978 as my family and I were returning to Michigan from Florida by car.

I checked in the newspapers and the one I have listed in 1986 (Atlanta Highway) apparently was the first and opened in early 1980, but missed making it into the 1981 directory. They apparently had one additional store on South Blvd for a very short time, and both were closed by 1986.

It looks like the Montgomery city directories had about a one-year lag, which is not all that unusual.

The location at Sturbridge Village is listed incorrectly as being open in 1986. Yes, a Winn-Dixie was open on Vaughn Road in 1986, but it was located where an Office Depot currently stands. Based on articles found in the Montgomery Advertiser, I have been able to confirm that the Winn-Dixie Marketplace at Sturbridge Village opened for its first day of business on November 4, 1993.
