New Haven Area Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-1978

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in New Haven (including East Haven, West Haven, North Haven, and Hamden, between 1925 and 1978, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

  • Google Maps seems to have a lot of trouble with Connecticut cities, particularly with streets bearing the name “Main Street” so some links may not work as expected. You may need to navigate manually.
  • That said, I have tried to update streets to reflect new names where I could figure them out.
  • The level of disinvestment in the area is staggering as can be seen from the lack of new stores from about the 1950s on, and the lack of chain locations of any sort by the late 1960s.

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • Co-operative Consumers
  • First National
  • Grand Union
  • Logan Bros.
  • Pathmark
  • Piggly Wiggly
  • Rosner’s
  • Shop-Rite
  • Stop & Shop
  • Universal

The A & P located in Branford, CT is not listed here. Now it is the location of Coastal Wine and Spirits at 103 N. Main St. Branford.

Good info. Thanks. Branford was outside the scope of this page as it was beyond the area of the New Haven directory data I had access to.
