This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Sioux City between 1925 and 2021, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Notes:

  • National Tea entered the market through its purchase of Council Oak Stores in 1957. The Council Oak branding was eliminated by 1960.
  • National Tea’s Sioux City division was purchased in 1972 by R-way and operated briefly as R-way National and Hy-Top Food Centers before converting to Piggly Wiggly in 1973/1974.
  • Safeway abandoned the area in 1982 and two of its three stores were acquired by Fareway.
  • The O.P. Skaggs franchise lasted longer in Sioux City than many other places, finally selling out in 1955 to Council Oak and Baron & Sons.
