Lansing Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-2020

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Lansing between 1925 and 2020, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Location list through 1960 courtesy of Andrew Turnbull.

Notes:

  • Sadly, there is a lot of missing data on this one. Discussion here. Basically, A&P and kroger are not listed pre-1946.
  • National and Schmidt’s data is from 1959 rather than 1960.
  • The Frandor Center addresses are inconsistent; stores that did not move still may have changed addresses. Listings on Frandor Avenue, Clippert Street, and Mall Court are suspect.
  • Okemos stores prior to 1978 are not reflected.
  • Listings post-2000 seem to have some significant omissions. I have extrapolated where possible.

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • Eberhard
  • Kroger
  • Meijer
  • National
  • Packer
  • Piggly Wiggly
  • Shop-Rite (local co-op)
  • Schmidt’s
  • Shop-Rite
  • Wrigley’s/Packer

I remember there was supposed to be an Eberhard’s supermarket on old US 27, just south of I-69, in north Lansing, which is now the Lansing Mega-Mall, a supermarket-sized flea market I visited one summer a few years ago.

Yes there was. I grew up just up the road from there on Boichot, and frequently stopped in there after delivering the Lansing State Journal in the mornings.
