Re: NEW: Winchester and Harrisonburg VA

I would guess the ABC application would mean it opened in 2008. It was vacant by 2011, which is earlier than the other Food Lion closures in the area.

Re: NEW: Winchester and Harrisonburg VA

I actually had that address but it kept not resolving with Google Maps before, so I pulled it till I could look further (and then forgot). I'll add it back in. It was only listed as Kroger in 1995. I didn't see a Food Lion listing in any subsequent directories, but they're always less accurate after...

I hope to get a few things ironed out when I can get hold of the print directories again,

NEW: Springfield OH 1925-2020 (good one)

OK, this one is fascinating. Springfield was a fairly large city through much of the 20th century, and there was a lot more to uncover here that I initially expected. I ended up going a little deeper into the research on this one than I sometimes do. Enjoy. Or don't. Your call. https://www.groceteri...

Despite the fact that they were relatively new when the site began, those interiors are pushing 30 now so I think they definitely qualify as “history” at this point.

Big update this weekend now includes Independence and Kansas City, Kansas. I hope to add other suburbs in the future, specifically Raytown and Shawnee Mission/Overland Park.

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Newspaper archives suggest that the Kroger opened about 1972, which was after the Family Center experiment more or less ended (I think) and was a couple of years before the first superstores.

Sorry. No updates from the newspapers as I don’t have access to any Denver papers from that time.

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Rather a late pre-Superstore, has a lot of the Family Center DNA despite not quite being one. Agreed. Also the other large building on the site, which was probably some flavor of discount department store, argues against its being a Family Center as well. But yeah, it definitely has the FC design t...
