Re: Sacramento: Stop-n-Shop
The Stop-N-Shop was demolished to make room for expansion of Sutter General Hospital sometime in the late 70s/early 80s. Store was known for the use of S & H green stamps. You could see it from what was then known as Highway 99 (pre-business 80 terminology).

Re: Zody's
Florin Road/Stockton Bl Zody's was, indeed, a White Front in it's previous incarnation. My father bought a turntable/cassette combo for me at that Zody's around 1981. Had it it for around 15 years before it died.

Happy Steak
Back in the early 70s there was a chain of steak houses in Sacramento called "Happy Steak." Used to love going there. Don't remember how many locations they had, but they sure did advertise on TV. The one I went to the most was in the same mall as the old (still operating) K-Mart on Stockt...

Re: DEFUNCT Home Improvement Chains
Can't remember all the locations, but in Sacramento we had Lumberjack and Handyman stores. Before Home Depot or Lowe's people would go Lumberjack to get all their homebuilding supplies. Handyman was a place where you could get hardware as well as lots of Christmas ornaments. My mom and grandma would...

Re: Auto Parts Club
In Sacramento there was an auto parts club store in the late 80's in what had been a former Rhodes/Liberty House store in South Gate mall. Don't recall exactly what the name of the place was though.

Re: Burger Chef
In Sacramento there was a Burger Chef on Fruitridge Rd east of 24th St in the early 70's. After closing it was an independent burger joint then it became a Dairy Queen in the 80's.

Re: Pioneer Chicken
Pioneer disappeared from Sacramento about 25 years ago. I moved to Socal in 1995 and what do I see: Pioneer Chicken. I resisted the temptation to eat at one until 2005. I went to the one in Bell Gardens and discovered that it still tasted the same.

Yes, it's the Cal-State Auto Repair. No bat wings, but an old Phillips 66 nonetheless.

Re: Toy Chains
Lyman Cox's "The Toy Shop" in Sacramento had a location in Arden Fair (pre-renovation) and one in Florin Mall. Awesome displays of model trains. There was also Talkin's Toyland on Stockton Bl (pre-Little Saigon). Neither had the amount of merchandise as Toys R Us or KayBee, but they were o...

Re: Florin Mall, South Sacramento
Long before the Arden Fair renovation, Sunrise Mall did it's share of drawing shoppers away from Florin. Was an OK mall 'til the early 80's. By 1990, not much was appealing there. Then came the total redo of what had been a blah shopping center (Arden Fair). Haven't lived in Sacramento since 1995, b...

Re: Corti Brothers, Sacramento, CA
Yes, the Corti Brothers on Freeport Bl south of Fruitridge Rd is in the same locale as the infamous jet fighter crash into the Farrell's ice cream parlor. That was big news back then and probably why not much other than Corti Bros survived in the Crossroads mall over the years.

Sacramento Grants store
My mom used to shop in the Grants store located in the SouthGate Mall on Florin Rd in the late 60s. I remember that they had a pretty decent lunch counter. That was before the construction of Florin Mall down the street and the decline of the area.

Sacramento White Fronts
There were 2 White Fronts that I can recall in Sacramento. The first one was in located at Florin Rd and Stockton Bl just east of the Florin Mall. The second one was somewhere on Arden Way. Can't remember the crossstreets. If I remember correctly, the Florin/Stockton store was briefly a Zodys in the...
