Re: Early Walgreens stores in Michigan
Here's a Walgreen's pool on Flickr; http://www.flickr.com/groups/walgreens/pool/ This store in Kenosha, WI is typical of the 1950s and '60s Walgreens: neon sign, pendant fluorescent fixtures and a cone-shaped spotlight in the interior, and square recessed incandescent fixtures over the entrance; htt...

Re:
So does anyone know when the Millbrae location changed from "Broadway" to QFI? The store does front Broadway but the entrance is closer to El Camino Real, if I remember it correctly. It never closed when QFI acquired the market June 3, 1963. Broadway Market was actually a small chain. The...

Re: Bashas'
This website transcribes an interview with the existing generation of the Basha's, and has a few exterior photos, including the store above. That store is the oldest continuously-operating Basha's. Opening in 1956 as a flagship store for a Basha's new format, it emulated Von's format at the time; ht...

Re: Any NON-FOOD Fred Meyer stores still operating?
There is a NON-FOOD Fred Meyer still operating. It is the Greenwood store in Seattle. It is formerly a Leslie's/Valu-Mart store. There have been attmepts to add food at this location. Across the parkling lot is a store called Greenwood Market, which is a former Lucky store. I forgot about these, de...

Re: Safeway Super S Stores In The Northwest
Yes Safeway Super S did exist in Washington, such as this one in Bellevue seen on Charles Hathaway's site; http://www.flickr.com/photos/romleys/1507226127/ As for Oregon, the closest Safeway stores to the Super S operation were "Safeway Variety Centers". There were two in Eugene: one was n...

Toronto: 1958 Grand Union nominated for designation
Despite imminent redevelopment of the rest of the shopping center, the former Grand Union supermarket at 15 Ellesmere Rd. in Toronto, later a Dominion and now a Metro, was nominated for historical designation by the Scarborough Community Council. It opened August 20, 1958, and represented the larges...

Re:
The Safeway in Eugene, OR at 145 E. 18th and Pearl was reconstructed in 2002. This involved the demolition of all but two walls, which I'm guessing are the back wall and the right wall that touches the neighboring drug store; http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-90213436.html Here's a nice color photo f...

There was a two-story Britt's at 855 Broadway in Millbrae, CA (last a Mervyn's since the 1970s), which opened in 1964.

Re: 9845 Sw Barbur Blvd. Portland: former Piggly Wiggly
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Now that you mention it, the pylon that's still on the left corner of the building looks the same one as the one in the old photo, so maybe the building really is from 1936 and was expanded by Piggly Wiggly in the 1950s. The satellite view shows a clear joint between...

9845 Sw Barbur Blvd. Portland: former Piggly Wiggly
Later expanded, presumably for the subsequent 3 Boys Market. Now Barbur World Foods. Judging from the cars and the building, I think it's from later than 1936 though;
