Gemco
I'll second the comment about Gemco. In the mid-70s I lived a few blocks from the Gemco on Madison near I-80 in Sacramento and bought nearly all of my gas at that store. I remember using my Gemco credit card pretty much exclusively as a gas credit card. I don't think the Treasury stores in northern ...

Marriage
So, now that they're bringing back the Lucky name, can we say that they're not exactly divorced, but that Lucky has decided to take back her maiden name?

Old Airport Area
I believe the location mentioned as being near the old airport was at Freeport and Fruitridge, in the same shopping center with the ill-fated Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor where 22 people were killed by a plane crashing into the building in 1972.

Supermarket Sweep
I think that was the 90s incarnation of the show. The 60s version was definitely filmed in actual markets.

Stater Bros.
Did you mean WEST of the 605? Because nearly all Stater Bros. are east of the 605. The only one I can think of that's west is in Long Beach. It looks almost like a stater brothers interior. But there are none east of the 605 Freeway.

Food Fair and "Supermarket Sweep"
I'd seen a few mentions of "Food Fair" on these boards and for some reason the name sounded familiar. I know there were never any Food Fair stores in any of the places I've lived (SF Bay Area from the 50s to the 70s; Northern Virginia from 78-87; L.A. Area since then), but I had a vague re...

Arcadia
Yes, that's right. It's in a shopping center called President Plaza. I didn't know about its previous incarnation as a Pantry. The Pavilions was already there when I got here in 87 (as was the one in Monrovia.) And there was still a Pantry in Duarte (NW corner of Huntington/Mt. Olive.) I made an err...

Rite-Aid
The Rite-Aid in Duarte (formerly Thrifty) is across the street to the north, in the shopping center with the Big Lots (former Vons.) I don't think there's a drugstore in the Mike's Food shopping center--certainly not a chain anyway.

Wow!
Totally cool picture! I live a few miles east of this location. The photo was apparently taken from approximately where the Carl's Jr. on the SE corner of Huntington and Buena Vista is today. This market still exists-- it's called Mike's Food now. I don't know if I'd have been able to tell for sure ...

Tianguis
I vaguely remember a Tianguis on Peck near Valley in El Monte, and perhaps also in the Baldwin Park Towne Center. When I moved to the San Gabriel Valley in 1987, there was a Pantry Market near my house. I believe they were also owned by Vons, as were Williams Bros., a chain from the Central Coast ar...

Davis, CA
When I was attending college in Davis, CA in the early 70s, there was a Safeway and a Pay-and-Save in University Mall, a small indoor mall that also housed Lawrence's, a small department store. The Safeway left, and a local independent, State Market moved in. Apparently that space now houses a Cost ...

More on Rhodes
The Rhodes stores I remember in the SF Bay Area were in Dublin (became Liberty House) and in the Park-N-Shop center in Concord. I don't remember if that one became a Liberty House or not. I seem to vaguely remember that they tried out a discount store concept called "Rhodesway" briefly. (A...

OK ... so I'm NOT crazy! I found this ad for sale on eBay-- it clearly shows Baza'r as a discount department store, and lists several locations in Washington, Oregon, and California, including the Pleasant Hill store I mentioned earlier. http://www.adspast.com/store/skin1/images/pics6/bazar69tonex.j...
