Re: old store brands
That sounds similar to Knudsen. Weren't they 50% owned by Hughes Markets and 50% owned by Stater Bros at one point? I think this happened after Kraft bought them out but spun off the SoCal milk operation. Kraft and Hughes bought them in 1986 after Knudsen filed for Chapter 11. Their milk plant was ...

Re: old store brands
I also remember the ads with the singing cows: "All us cows/do our best/for Jerseymaid" Jerseymaid's plant opened in 1936 at 1040 West Slauson in South LA and it closed after the 1992 riots. Jerseymaid later became part of a joint venture of Vons/Shopping Bag, Market Basket, Thriftimart/Fi...

Re: old store brands
By any chance, would these products be related to the Jerseymaid milk that is sold at Target stores?? Vons phased out the Jerseymaid name in favor of Lucerne about 5-6 years ago but Safeway has been using their Lucerne Foods division to reuse some of its historic brands to sell to third parties. Fo...

All this talk of new stores may soon be moot. There are multiple news reports today that Mervyn's may file for Chapter 11 in the coming days.

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
I just found an unusual ad from the 6/22/1967 edition of the LA Times announcing the separation of the Vons and Shopping Bag chains. It thanks customers for shopping at both chains but explains that the two chains are now separate. It looks like it was jointly paid for since it doesn't tout any one ...

Re: old store brands
Lucky had a generic line with a yellow label. At first it had its own aisle, making comparison shopping difficult, then the products migrated onto the shelves with their higher-priced bretheren. Alpha Beta used a buying co-op called Topco in the 1950s which had the Food Club, Top Frost, Gaylord, Top...

Re: Old Supermarket Burns Down in South LA
This address was listed as Penny Market in a 1948 ad. By 1950 it was called Big City Market according to an article about a robbery and a 1957 ad called it Toy's Big City Market.

According to a 1976 Times article when brea Plaza was under construction there was an Albertsons. The 1978 ad from the Fazio's merger lists the Albertsons at 429 Associated Road, which is Borders. I didn't realize RAD stock was hovering around a buck. I had a small position a few years ago when it w...

Re: 1980s: "The Meat Market at Sears"
I found identical ads in the LA Times. There was one ad in June 1984 using the lower-case logo you have, and several in January 1985 with the 1980's logo at the top (the one in all caps with the stripe in the letters) then the ads stopped. It must not have been something that lasted very long. The s...

Re: Stater Brothers, Westside of San Bernardino
1675 Mt. Vernon was a Safeway as of 1957. I couldn't find information on the other 2 addresses. The earliest list of Stater Bros locations I have is from 1973 and the 1085 Highland location is listed. If something in San Bernardino shows up in the LA Times archive it's pure luck. Now if I had access...

Re: Redlands, Calif.-Stater Bros.
Sorry, I don't have any information on whether the store on Colton and Orange was a replacement store. It is a probably a good assumption. The store on Redlands Blvd is rather close to the Redlands Mall. Part of the deal made to approve the building of the mall was that it would include a grocery st...

I wonder what store this was........ http://www.flickr.com/photos/dyingindowney/2574443318/ I'm going to guess that it's the Oxnard store. If you look at the West view you'll see the wood pattern match on the back part of the overhang. http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTSN&cp=pq...

There's some info on the West Covina store on this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1877&p=7467. Before it was a Liquor Barn it was a Vendome Liquor and before that possibly the grocery concession for the original tenant of the Kmart building, Save-Co and later Ca...

Re: Gino's Restaurants in LA?
In July 1968 the Times printed an article about "the second of an estimated 55 Southland" Roy Rogers stores being started at Garden Grove Blvd and Gilbert St in Garden Grove. It doesn't say where the first location was, and I found no articles about the other 53 planned stores. I found two...
