Re: Possible former Kroger? 3222 S. Main Joplin, MO
Kroger had a Kansas City division until 1981-82 and the Dillon merger didn't happen until 1983-84. I believe Kroger and A&P both exited the region at roughly the same time frame. The store appears to be an older store that got a Kroger superstore remodel, and there appears to be some modificatio...

Re: Seessel's
I double checked and 2002 was the correct date, it seems the Nashville Albertson's were sold to Publix at the same time though. As far as being upmarket, the Seessel's were no longer perceived as being upmarket by the customers as Kroger had upgraded its stores that competed directly with Seessel's ...

Re: Seessel's
Seessel's was a Memphis based chain, acquired by Bruno's in the mid 90's and sold to Albertson's around 1999. Albertson's sold the chain to St. Louis based Schnuck's in 2005. Seessel's was the upscale supermarket operator in Memphis but by the time the sale to Schnuck's came, the Seesel's name was n...

Re: 35th Anniversary of the first barcode scanner transaction
Troy, OH was chosen for several reasons, one its proximity to Dayton, OH, hq of NCR with the Marsh's location already having the NCR electronic cash register, only the scanners would need t be added, and two, probably for Marsh's the biggest reason, Marsh's was making a push into Kroger's home marke...

Re: History Of Kroger On Moreland Ave. (Atlanta)
The Moreland Shopping Center was on the DeKalb side of Moreland Ave, in unicorporated territory. I'm not sure if the second grocer was Big Apple or not, which likely would have been re-bannered Food Giant during the mid or late 70's. Kroger replaced its store with an early 80's greenhouse store, bui...

Re: Colonial Food Store At Buford Highway/Clairmont Rd.>?
The brickwork of the Colonial is typical of 1950's and some 1960's Colonial Stores which would predate Buford Clairmont Mall which is why I don't think the chain was in BC Mall. The Winn-Dixie had the typical 1970's WD facade, so it's likely original to the mall. Winn-Dixie arrived in the Atlanta ar...

Re: Colonial Food Store At Buford Highway/Clairmont Rd.>?
I don't think this was in Buford/Clairmont Mall, the Winn-Dixie was considerably larger. Kroger was originally located in Northeast Plaza, the current Kroger store at Skye Hill between Buford Highway and Clairmont Road is the 1970's replacement. In the 1950's and 60's, Colonial was the leading Atlan...

Re: HARCO drugs in Alabama
Harco was acquired by Rite Aid drugs in 1996 or 97. The company was based in Tuscaloosa, AL and also operated Carport auto parts stores. The deal happened around the same time K&B Drugs was acquired in the Gulf Coast region.

Re: *Photo*Questions About Former A&P Location In Roswell?
This was a Big Star Food Center which opened around 88 or 89, one of Grand Union's last new build Big Star's in the Atlanta area. The store was initially a high volume store, but by the time A&P took over the Atlanta area Big Star operations, Cub Foods was across Holcomb Bridge and volume had dr...

Re: The Atlanta Kroger they forgot to remodel
The Food Bazaar was Winn-Dixie, which was unaltered most of its life. I believe it closed in the first Atlanta round of closings in 2000 that preceded the conversion to Save Rite. It was bascially unaltered most of its life and had a decor similar to a Kroger superstore, if somewhat less detailed an...

Re: The Atlanta Kroger they forgot to remodel
South DeKalb Mall opened in 1968, and Kroger launched the superstore format in 1972. The exterior looks like that of some early-70's pre-superstores, but all the signage until recent was superstore. I suspect it's a store planned prior to the launch of the superstore, but modified during constructio...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P
Perhaps an older store has survived in one of the boroughs of NYC. Queens, Brooklyn or The Bronx. I believe one Super Fresh stores in DC is fairly old and even some SuperFresh stores are former centennials. Could there be an old gem in Philly, be it an A&P/SuperFresh or Acme?

Any traditional Meijer's supermarkets still operating
Anyone from Michigan know whether or not Meijer's operates any pre-Thrifty Acres supermarkets? Or any former Meijer's supermarkets still operating as a reletively intact supermarket. I'm pretty certain all currently operating Meijer's would be classified as a supercenter or hypermarket, but it's pos...

Re: Burger Chef
Burger Chef must have retreated from New England and the West Coast prior to being absorbed by Hardee's in 1982. Most surviving West and New England examples are of the "kite" prototype, typical of the 1960s and Hardee's did not gain a presence in these regions(until the forced conversion ...

Re: Kentucky Roast Beef?
I recall seeing a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Boone, NC that sold Kentucky Roast Beef in the late 70's. The building was the traditional old school KFC design, bucket sign and all, but in the brown and white color scheme of Lendy's owned KFC's as opposed to red and white. I assume Lendy's may have ope...
