Re: Mayfair Markets - Geography and History
I would side with FundingUniverse, as company histories tend to distort their own history. I did a bit of research on Tom Thumb (the Texas supermarket owned by Safeway/Albertsons, not the Florida gas station owned by Kroger) and found that the grocery chain tried to rewrite history a la Ray Kroc an...

Re: Mayfair Markets - Geography and History
There is an interesting article about Mayfair's history and legal problems here: http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/arden-group-inc-history/ Interesting thing is their description of Mayfair's history: "The company's history may be traced as far back as the 1933 incorporation of W...

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
The oldest portion on the left side is now a Chase bank (stand-alone) which seemed to have been where the original A&P might've been. The main store did exist as of 1967 so probably could've been built as an A&P (building new right next to the old store) but I thought A&P really didn't ...

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
The only one I know for sure was the Santa Barbara store which opened originally as an A&P. Albertson's divested the store to Gelson's when they merged with Lucky.pseudo3d wrote:I wonder if Albertsons ended up getting a few A&P stores in the deal.

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
Although another posted here that a Shopping Bag existed in 1930 I never saw it. During WWII there was just one, on Colorado in the Eagle Rock neighborhood. Not long after the war's end another opened about 2 miles east, again on Colorado. A Mr. Hayden, a member of our church, was either the owner ...

You could be right about the Market Basket connection. I remember the Market Basket at 3rd & Fairfax in Los Angeles had the same interior features as the store in that video. The main difference was the store front which was not glass at that particular Masket Basket.

Re: When did Safeway's Washington DC division become "Eastern"?
I don't know the exact date but probably around 1986-1987. If I remember correctly Richmond, VA was a separate division that was merged into the D.C division becoming the Eastern Division. This is about the same time Safeway closed it's San Diego division based in National City and merged it with th...

11766 Wilshire Blvd, West LA--Pavilions. It's the short building between the towers. This store has been talked about in another thread as having been a Ralphs before it was torn down to build the tower. http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=pp734453vcd0&style=o&lvl=2&scene=3580...

Re: Safeway Super Stores and Marketplaces (1977-1994)
So did the Food Barn stores actually operate under that banner, or were they still under the Safeway banner? The Hazel Dell store is still open today as a regular Safeway and seems to be doing just fine. They did operate under the Food Barn banner. I think one of the divisions that was closed in th...

Re: Safeway Super Stores and Marketplaces (1977-1994)
In the 1980's Safeway tried doing a discount 'no frills' format called Food Barn and a liquor store called Liquor Barn (that was somewhat similar to today's BevMo). Both stores generally used smaller Safeway properties that were no longer profitable operation as a Safeway. A lot of the Liquor Barn s...

Re: Vons Pantry Stores
Do you think it's possible that the Pavilions "Place" (I think it's just Pavilions now) near Beverly Hills (I want to say Beverly Glen and Beverly Bl.?) was a Pantry Store? It's the one that had a weird parking garage next to it. That store was originally a Safeway and came to Vons when t...

Re: Vons Pantry Stores
Just ran across them in this article . From what I can gather, they were a chain of 10 stores that Vons purchased from Cullum Cos. (of Tom Thumb fame...it would ultimately share the Safeway umbrella by 1999) and were converted to the Vons name soon after. Since Cullum had bought Pantry Stores at th...

Interesting former Marina
This is a former Safeway marina store in San Diego that is now a tiny Target: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/target-express-san-diego?select=YDMyMwajMcfF_8dYI4YGPg I had never heard of Target Express before. Interesting that they retained so many features of the Marina format. On a side note looks l...
