Re: Albertsons-Lucky Montebello

Max Foods, apparently, cannot become a Lucky store until they agree to close the Albertsons across the street. Why would they have to wait until Albertsons closes? They're both owned by SuperValu -- what would be the problem with continuing that situation, but with a different name for Max Foods? A...

15 January 2007 | Link this Spencer's in Morro Bay, California, snapped by Mark while he was visiting his parents thsi weekend. I can't help thinking this used to be something else. Whatever it was, it looks pretty cool. From the pix that was posted today on the main page...POSSIBLY a CORONET dime ...

You're killing me Jeff! Back then, I honestly asked them one time WHAT a 404 is/was...as it seemed to ALWAYS be called. I THINK it was for a clean-up or something!

When Lucky entered San Diego in the 1950's there was already a company that operated two markets in the area called Lucky so they couldn't use their own name. They decided to call their stores Food Basket in San Diego county for that reason. They didn't buy the chain from anyone, most were built fr...

I remember the annual trip to Hinshaw's at the Quad to pick up boy scout and girl scout uniforms. They were the only store that carried them. Exactly! I did the same. When the chain closed...I shopped both of the going-out-of-business sales. Sure, I bought merchandise...yet, I also bought some of t...

As I said in the initial post, 804 Beverly is still a Vons. In looking @ that same center...from the left side...what is now Ross or Marshalls was JCPenney. When JCPenney moved to the Montebello Town Center...it became Service Merchandise. Now it is either of those clothing stores, correct? At the ...

In San Bernardino CA...there are two (2) former SAFEWAY locations that are used for other purposes. One (1), off Highland Avenue is a surgery center. The other is a church (near Arden area). Si, that is the one! There is also a former Marina store off the 10 in Fontana/Colton area. It is a furnitur...

The mall was built in the race track parking lot.

That's interesting...never knew that, Thanks! Now, isn't there talk of building a SECOND center/mall on the rest of Santa Anita?!

Ahh Hinshaws. My family had a pretty deep connection to that former retailer... My Grandfather was the on site manager for the company that owned the Quad and the Arcade. Here's a link to a 1991 story: http://www.allbusiness.com/sales/274035-1.html Deadmalls.com does a nice quick job of describing ...

HINSHAWS--Southern California

HINSHAWS was a department store chain.

The site in Whittier (The Quad) is still standing...it was divided up. I think upstairs is STAPLES. I believe the Arcadia site was demolished for NORDSTROM (next to Santa Anita).

Where were the other sites? Any standing? What's in them?

BUFFUMS--Southern California

BUFFUMS was a department store chain...I belive started/owned by the Chandler family, then owners of the Los Angeles Times.

The location in Pomona now houses a chiropractic college.

Where were the other sites? Any still standing? What's in 'em?

Furr's is still going strong in TX and the Southwest, they are experimenting with a "Fresh Buffet" concept to compete with Golden Corral in a few markets. And yes the Furr's cafs. have outlived the grocery chain that started them - The Furr's grocery chain died in 2002-03 The Furr's Cafet...

LIQUOR PLAZA--Whittier

crap, I'm thinking liquor mart. Also, possibly LIQUOR PLAZA? There was an ALPHA BETA on the corner of Colima & Whittier Boulevard. It is now Trader Joe's. ALPHA BETA closed the store...and it reopened as LIQUOR PLAZA...which is assume was to compete with LIQUOR BARN. LIQUOR PLAZA did not last t...

I'm guessing that you're talking about the Hughes/Ralphs on West Whittier Blvd (near Idaho). Do you happen to know if the Big Lots (former PicNSave) on the northeast corner of Harbor/La Habra was also a Market Basket. The woven tower logo has always made me think that it was. And there was another ...
