Re: Wal-Mart stores with old signage

I've always thought that Walmart stores that are way behind the times in terms of decor was a sign that an expansion to or replacement store as a Supercenter was in the plans. The Abingdon, MD store that was mentioned earlier in thread was initially up for relocation as a Supercenter. When that fail...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

now closed Stroudsburg, PA store had the same exterior (thanks to Google Street View for having older pictures to show us this store!). Was this store in the same plaza with the K-Mart? If so, it actually began life as a Victory Market back in the 70's. Yep, other end of the strip was a Kmart that ...

Re: A Little Help?

Here's the link to the article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/business/1990/06/04/giant-safeway-still-dominate-regions-food-shopping/16677c4e-859f-4447-9ba2-3cadcd6483a5/ And thanks for the Thriftway article, that was "interesting" to say the least. Is there any followup as to wh...

Here's a 2019 article on Grocery Store sales in Loudoun County: https://www.insidenova.com/news/loudoun/harris-teeter-giant-battle-for-top-spots-in-loudoun-grocery-market/article_4ca37a26-9da5-11e9-b7fd-0b2a9b4ce6ac.html Since this article was written Lidl opened a second store in Ashburn while Ald...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

So I see. Interesting Giant Eagle still operates out there. Unless it was another short-lived MD store that closed outright I guess it isn't on that list. Thanks. Westminster was most likely a Metro (distincive facade) prior to Shoppers. Said store was transferred over to Shoppers in 2000, before t...

Re: A Little Help?

I found a 1990 WASHINGTON POST article about the top 10 grocers in the DC area (Giant and Safeway were #'s 1 and 2; surprise surprise!). Number 9 was Basics (3 stores) while Number 10 was Dayton/Mitchell Thriftways (also 3 stores). I've never heard of either. There's a post here that says Basics wa...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

Hmm, that is interesting. I think I might have seen them mentioned somewhere but I can't be sure. What complicates the question is that the first Lowe's in the center might have closed around the same time Hechinger went out of business. The site seems to be sized a lot more like the stores Heching...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

As for Bel Air, I was speaking of another location which opened around the time of their expansion blitz. https://web.archive.org/web/20060525141256/http://www.weisproject.com/articledetail.php?num=20 I would guess that it relocated to the Martin's there. By the way, how many MDs were divested with...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

Are you sure that Lotte was Hechinger? I was always told that Lotte was originally Lowes. They closed the store. Then later came back and built the large store that is currently on the opposite side of the site. There was a gap, from what I've been told, between the old and new Lowes stores. I work...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

Sure is an interesting history to go over. I wonder if there were any more Weis in existence, or if this is all they tried out. I have a few more notes about Weis, meanwhile: *Centreville appears to have closed by 1997, lasting under 10 years at the site *Chantilly might have been closer to US 50 (...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

Sully Square was behind the area where Shoppers Food/Aldi is and is the smallest of the three. Mainly has a Bank of America, a Little Caesar's Pizza and a Midas Muffler plus a few other stores. Sully Square had the K-Mart and Weis plus the Hechinger's. The Hechinger's was a Lotte by 2014. Beatty Co...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

I remember Weis closing all their northern VA stores and thought that was that. Imagine my surprise when looking at the Weis website recently to find they had a number of VA stores still open today - 6 in Fredericksburg, 2 in Stafford County (Aquia Harbour and Garrisonville - about halfway between ...

DC area Grand Union stores that became Basics

In the late 1980s I recall several Grand Union stores becoming Basics Food stores. This happened around the time that Grand Union pulled out of the DC market. Basics was a deep discount (for the day) grocery with lots of generics and store brands. What I'm wondering is if Basics was developed by Gra...

Re: Acme in the DC area

The Acme was at Lee Highway and Graham Road. Grand Union/Great Valu was Annandale Road and Arlington Blvd. Do you know if the nearby Loehmann's has closed? I wonder why the Giant-anchored center is named after that store instead. Loehmann's is bankrupt and closed their only other store remotely clo...

Re: Acme to IGA conversion, Keyser, WV

What is now Dunham's Sports in the LaVale Shopping Center was originally a Safeway. I read in some retail message board somewhere that after Safeway closed the location became the first Martins (Giant-PA) location in Cumberland. Martins moved across I-68 to a 1990s mirror front store that is now Gab...
