Re: NEW: Johnstown PA 1925-1960
Cupp's was acquired by American Stores and formed the nucleus of their Johnstown Division which ranged down to Morgantown WV and into the Pittsburgh area. It was never a large division and the stores were rather scattered with never more than a half dozen in Greater Pittsburgh. Paul Cupp of Cupp's e...

Re: Pathmark in Maryland?
There was a signup during the early 90s for a Pathmark "coming soon" in East Baltimore in the Highlandtown area on Eastern Avenue just before entering the Bayview area and the interstate. To my knowledge, it was never built. A store that now operates as the "Market at Highlandtown&quo...

Re: Guam- Safeway
Probably supplied by whomever was supplying the military PXes on Guam. That would have been the likeliest way to make it viable. There probably were more than enough Americans w/o PX privileges, such as people at the University or at Continental Airlines (which had a regional hub there ), to justify...

Re: Why was A&P so committed to being in Connecticut?
Connecticut has a number of distinct submarkets--Hartford and New Haven, for example, are very different places, but the state is relatively affluent and despite very little population growth different parts have attracted new chains over time: For example, Shop-Rite has returned to the Hartford ar...

Re: White Front Stores
Just a postscript to an earlier post here---White Front was owned by Interstate Department Stores which also owned Topps which was in the Northeast and Midwest. Interstate also owned a large number of small town department stores which predated their owning these discount chains. Topps was more appa...

Re: NEW: Memphis TN 1917-1990
Interesting that Jitney Jungle was there for a very short time. They remained in the Mississippi Delta (places like Greenwood) that were not too far from Memphis until Winn-Dixie bought them in the 90s. National entered the market by buying Montesi's, which had 9 stores and a warehouse, in 1955. It ...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021
Now, for National. True to form, the chain emerged in Peoria fairly late and fairly scrappily, opening its first stores by 1960...and at least two of them were conversions from other grocers. 3127 N University St was originally a Piggly Wiggly, and the building still bears an interesting loop-shape...

Re: NEW: Duluth and Superior, 1925/30 to present
National had a division in Duluth with stores as far east as Marquette, MI, so there should be an old distribution center somewhere which probably stuck around until the late 60s/early 70s. Even after being consolidated with Minneapolis, it ranged as far as Iron Mountain. Minneapolis was one of thei...
