Re: Possible ex-Kroger
That was an early greenhouse. There are examples in Baton Rouge that have the same structure. The earlier stores had a straight wall with the curves just like that one, and were in the direct center of the store's facade. Later versions followed the angle of the greenhouse section, and were usually ...

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)
Wonder World was created by Payless as directed by Kmart to try to use up the real estate that Kmart had begun vacating. It was a highly promotional chain, with quality somewhat lesser than Kmart. It didn't last long. They started around 1983-84, and were gone by 1987.

Re: Early Kmart closures
Several stores come to mind: Marshall, TX: In the Marshall Mall (though its definition as a mall is pretty loose). Closed just after Christmas 1990. This store never did well. It was only about 50,000 Sq. Ft. It is now a call center. Henderson, TX: S. Van Buren Dr. This was a standalone store. It wa...

Re: Possible former Kroger
Looking at Bing Maps, this store doesn't appear to be a Kroger. There has been a Kroger over at 1960 and US 59N for many years, predating the greenhouse era. I think this was just an independant.

Systemax, Inc... Parent company of Tiger Direct, and Circuit City (these days, anyways..) now owns CircuitCity.com Systemax also bought CompUSA out of bankruptcy. Several CompUSA stores reopened as the new CompUSA, which was more along the lines of a Tiger Direct store. None of the Circuit City sto...

That logo is the Kmart Australia logo. It's somewhat modified from the original Kmart logo, and is still in use at their stores.

Re: ALPHA BETA advertising campaigns
I know that Skaggs Alpha Beta lived until at least 1992. That was the year they converted all AB stores outside of CA to Jewel/Osco. I lived in Texas at that time, and remember the conversion. It didn't last long, as all the converted stores were sold to Albertsons a little more than a year later. I...

Re: Possible former Safeway (Katy TX)
I think the arch you're referring to in the back is just over the mechanical rooms. It does not run the length of the store. I also believe that the store is both too new and too big to be a Safeway. The other store you reference is much smaller. When SWY left Texas in 1987-1988, the largest stores ...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P
The entire Gulf Coast division of A&P was sold, save for a few stores that didn't meet their criteria, to Rouses Markets of Thibodaux, LA. Rouses is the largest independant in Louisiana, with almost 40 stores, including 4 in Mississippi. Rouses kept the Royal St. store open with few modification...

Bauhaus font, running up the walls in all departments. Mushroom lamps in orange over checkouts, in green over produce. Essentially, this: http://www.groceteria.com/kroger/gallery/pages/Image44.html This decor package wasn't limited to the greenhouse stores. I know of several Family Centers that got ...

Re: Pensacola Albertsons: Going, Going...
Of the pictures you have, Albertsons has stores that match each of these interiors in Lafayette, LA. The main store has the newer interior. We have one store that has the pink/grey interior, and we have two new build stores with the lack of a ceiling. Albertsons, LLC is trying to unload these stores...

Re: History of: Kmart, City of Industry CA
Acutally, Woolco and Target were worse. Target opened stores near their home base in Minnesota, then skipped all the way to Dallas and Houston with just a few stores. Woolco did much of the same as Kmart, since they had their own established distribution network as well. Woolco was much more careful...

Re: History of: Kmart, City of Industry CA
Wow. Their first year in business and they'd already made it out to California? You have to keep in mind that while the first Kmart opened in 1962, S.S. Kresge was already a nationwide company with their dime store operation. This was heralded as one of the main reasons why Kmart was able to spread...

Others I have seen: Many, many Krogers. I went to a former Superstore Kroger in Hot Springs, AR which had the new 90's build Kroger next door. The Big Lots store still had many of the original Superstore decor items we've seen. The SuperX side was a Big Lots Furniture store, and had a doorway betwee...

Shreveport, LA on Mansfield Road is in an expanded Centennial A&P. Alexandria, LA is in a 70's A&P.
