Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

Actually, I was able to dive back into the movie and see the corner of a street sign, and now I'm 99% certain it's the current Pavilions at Melrose and Vine. Interesting. I don't remember that El Taco. I'm assuming it would have been where the mini mall across the street is now located? But that wo...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

I don't know for sure but it looks a lot like the old Venice location. That was a fairly typical design for Safeway at the time.

Re: Hughes market Whittier ca

It looks like it was probably built as a Market Basket. Was the banner history Market Basket / Hughes / Ralphs / Northgate-Gonzales ? Long as I can remember it was a Hughes then Ralphs I think Gary The reason I think it was a Market Basket is because on Google Maps there are still some images of th...

Re: When did the Vons meat plant close?

Was it more of Vons' financial issues (stemming from this, among others) or Safeway's ambitions that Safeway purchased the remaining two-thirds of Vons in 1997? Vons financial performance had been mediocre for a while. This was just one of the causes. The failure of Omni, the Cesar Chavez arrest th...

Re: De Falco's-San Diego Area-1959

In addition to the stores listed, DeFalco's also had stores in Escondido, (Broadway?), Spring Valley, (Jamacha & Sweetwater), Pacific Beach, (Vons), and Mission Valley Bon Vivant, (West of Mission Center and way ahead of it's time). Founder Louie DeFalco had passed away in the early 60's. Firm ...

Re: When did the Vons meat plant close?

I don't know the exact date unfortunately but it seemed like it was a year or two after the Jack in the Box incident. Important information to keep in mind about that incident. Vons only ground the meat that Jack in the Box supplied. It was never mixed with Vons own meat but they suffered a drop in ...

Re: Old Safeway in Hollywoodland

I wonder if the name of the street changed? That street is now Belden Drive. This article shows Beachwood Market open in 1942 at 2699 Beachwood Drive which would place it right next to Safeway on the left. https://calisphere.org/item/be40a6eae6b9b0b3d8bc8d6e8c2770a0/ This is the Google street view: ...

Re: Which Chicagoland supermarket suffered the most under new ownership?

[Storewanderer claims that Albertsons really did have a timetable for what many of us thought would've happened in an alternate future--that ACME and Jewel-Osco would be transformed into Albertsons (or Albertsons-Osco) by the early 2000s. But yes, the acquisition of ASC in many ways crippled Albert...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center

In Westlake Village California, which is a master planned community, there are three supermarkets operating in what could be considered one shopping center. It's technically three different centers by name but all are on the same block and the centers are owned by and were developed by the same comp...
