Mervyn's operated the Westchester store as one level. I have no idea if there was a hidden unused second floor.
There's a picture of the grand opening at http://westchesterparents.org/?p=1204

Re: West Covina's Country Club Center
The Trader Joe's was the easternmost store in the chain along I-10 until about 1990-91 when the Redlands store opened. I know it was still open until about that time because I would shop there when I would take the 10 back from LA to Redlands.

Re: Mervyns
The Westchester store on Sepulveda was designed by Victor Gruen and was originally Milliron's that opened in 1949. It later became a Broadway and then a Mervyn's. It had rooftop parking, though that was closed off by the time it was a Mervyn's. There was also a restaurant, child care area, and a sma...

And this norms is now open. It looks like they used the sign from San Gabriel. The sign with the triangles was the standard Norms sign. This is from the Lotta Living thread: The sign was about 25% functional on closing night and the executive I talked to there said that their sign company advised a...

Re: Mayfair Market in Century City
The store opened on June 16, 1965 and was the 227th store in the chain. The theme of the store was "Shopping--A Century Ahead" which explains the "Space Column," the thing with the lights having off of it. I found a 1969 ad for an adjoining bank that refers to the store as a Gels...

Re: JONS Markets--Southern California
The Reseda store is a former Food Giant which later became a Vons. The Simi Valley store is indeed a former Lucky. What I find interesting about Jons is how they have adapted to the local neighborhood. If you go to the Van Nuys Blvd store you'll find a large selection of Hispanic foods. I have frien...

Re: Vintage Shopping Bag
That's a great picture. The Shopping Bag is now a Vons. It was one of the few Shopping Bag stores that was converted to a Vons before the forced divestiture. The gas station is gone, the WT Grant is now a CVS, and the Woolworth's was a Shoe Pavilion until recently. You can also see an Owl Rexall Dru...

It opened as in 1956 as a Nixon's Market, owned by Vice President Richard Nixon's brother Don. It replaced the original store across the street at 15806.

There's some mention of this store on this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1877 SCOA was a membership department store owned by Shoe Corporation of America but their ads used the slogan "Serving Communities of America." The West Covina store opened in Novem...

That depends on how long it's been sitting there :)javelin wrote:If you look closely at the case labeled "chilled wine" in the picture, you'll notice it contains gatorade and energy drinks. Could be grape flavored, but definitely not wine.

Re: Vons and Jensens, Palm Desert, CA
"A 1959 article mentions the construction of a 30,000 sqft Market Basket at the southwest corner of McCallum and Farrell." Is this article referring to the 2475 address? There was no address listed, just the corner. The mall was added in about 1980 so the loading dock may have been remove...

Re: A couple of Bay Area notes
t doesn't bug me quite as much as "Lucky" or "Costco's" at least, since there actually was a person named "Kroger" once. I'm guessing you mean "Lucky-apostrophe-s." The message board changed it to Lucky for some reason when I tried to post it. The one that bu...

Re: Historic Aerials Online
Looking at my neighborhood and finding out I live on what was once a creek is interesting., And my neighborhood sprung up Minerva-like from an orange grove. It's interesting to see how little things change in commercial structures though the years. What looks like a rather modern shopping center mi...
