For all those of you living in WA outside of Vancouver -- does anyone remember which pre-1995 Fred Meyer stores in your area had Home Improvement & Garden Centers (full-on, with a lumber department) when brand new, or as an add-on during the late 1970s?
I know for sure the Lynnwood store, due to its massive 178,000 sq. ft. size (remember, that was in 1968!), definitely had an inside Home Improvement & Garden Center when new.
Greater WA Fred Meyer stores confirmed to have Home Improvement & Garden Centers:
1959 - Lake City (had a freestanding HI&GC in 1978)
1968 - Lynnwood
1973 - Tacoma-Pacific
1973 - Tacoma-Stevens
1974 - Bellingham
1975 - Everett
1980 - Totem Lake (Kirkland)
1981 - Richland
1982 - Lakewood
1987 - Benson Plaza
1987 - Marysville
1989 - Lacey
1991 - Federal Way
Ex-Valu-Mart/Leslie's stores (all acquired in 1975):
Aurora
Bellevue
Burien
Greenwood
Midway (Kent)
Spokane-Francis
Spokane-Sprague
Yakima
Which of the above stores had Home Improvement & Garden Centers?

Re: Greater WA Fred Meyer Stores with Home Improvement & Garden Centers
Longview, which opened in the mid 70s, had one. At first it was in the main building, then moved into a building in front of the store (which, oddly enough, was an old Marina Safeway) during a remodel around 1989-1990 which placed sports, home improvement, auto, and garden center into that building. Everything was moved back into the main store, and that building was demolished, during a major remodel and addition in 2003, and the Fred Meyer gas station now occupies the space.

Yeah, that one too, though it lies closer to Vancouver than Seattle.Super S wrote:Longview, which opened in the mid 70s, had one. Do you remember any of the ex-Valu-Mart/Leslie's Fred Meyer stores having the Home Improvement & Garden Centers? As to the five here in Oregon, all of them except King Road (at 82nd) did, and the East Salem store (at Market St NE & Lancaster Dr) initially also had a freestanding Home Improvement & Garden Center.
