How to Quote Text in Message Replies

Post by Groceteria »

Hi all.

It seems some of you are having trouble quoting text in your message replies, so I thought a quick "how to" might be in order, as the message board software doesn't really make it all that intuitive.

How to quote:

It's very simple, actually. If you want to quote text from an earlier message in your reply, you need to click the "quote" button at the top left of the message in question INSTEAD OF clcking the "post reply" button. This will open a message reply window where the entire previous message is quoted.

In the box where you type your message, the quoted text will look like this:

Code: Select all
This is what the original poster said, and this is what you will be quoting. It can be long or short.

There can even be paragraph breaks.
You can just start typing your reply underneath it, and the whole previous message will show up insisde a quote box at the top of your message.

How to edit quoted text:

In those instances where you want to edit the quote (for example, to quote only a sentence or two), you may simply edit the quoted text. Whetever is left will still show up as a quote, as long as you leave the following tag at the beginning of the quote:

Code: Select all
and the following tag at the end:

Code: Select all
Anything that is BETWEEN these two tags will show up as quoted text.

A few notes on quotes:

1. It's usually not a good idea to quote a whole message, especially if it's long. Consider quoting only the part that's relevant to your response.

2. Make sure you're quoting the right person. Sometimes quoted text is requoted and it's hard to see who said what. The poster whose name appears where you see "NameOfOriginalPoster" above will be the one to whom the quote is attributed. You CAN replace this name if needed.

3. Please try to avoid line-by-line quote/rebuttal posts if possible. They're very annoying and more suited to an argument than a friendly exchange.
