1964 photo of marina Safeway interior, Sacramento

Post by TheStranger »

This photo is from page 16 of the November 1964 edition of Chain Store Age magazine...the question is, which of the two Sacramento marinas is it?

So far I only know of two...one is the most photographed example being at 2509 Fulton (at El Camino), which is actually in the unincorporated community (and possible future city) of Arden-Arcade, currently operating as Tognotti's Auto World. It's been Tognotti's since the mid-1970s.

The other is Market Basket (no connection to the old Southern California chain) at 3845 Marysville Road in the Del Paso Heights neighborhood, a few blocks south of I-80. (I think the address is a little off on the slideshow)

EDIT: This photo comes in from the December 1960 edition of Chain Store Age, pages 69-70. Since the article's focus is on a Sacramento Safeway manager and his approach to displays, I think the photos were taken at whatever store he worked at - and the date of this article suggests that this is the Marysville Boulevard store. Or at least that's what I'm conjecturing, because the Fulton Avenue marina (Tognotti's) has a design similar to the 1964 marina, now library, in Red Bluff.
