Vintage Supermarket Commercials I'd Love to See on YouTube
Kroger:
-- "Let's go Krogering" jingle, mid-1980s.
-- 1972-ish superstore jingle: "Tomorrow's store today. Kroger's got it!"
Lucky:
-- Vocal version of the Lucky Rewards Card jingle, circa 1997.
A&P:
-- WEEEEOOOOOO, 1970s.
-- Price and Pride, 1970s.
Food Lion:
-- Any of the original 1970s commercials with CEO Ralph Ketner.
-- "We have the same prices at the beach and at home."
Feel free to add your own to the list.

Ads I would like to see:
Fazio's:
Fazio's had an ad campaign in 1977 with the jingle "Mr. Fazio refuses to be undersold," presumably with the actual Mr. Fazio in the ad.
Lucky:
In 1980 Lucky had a very brief campaign with "Mr. Inflation" (unlike Mr. Fazio, I'm pretty sure Mr. Inflation was just an actor). Mr. Inflation said things like "Lucky's prices are low, but Key Buys deflate me." He wore black with dollar signs as buttons and cufflinks. I remember one commercial with him trying to go in through the out door.
And, of course, I would love to see any Lucky ad with the fabulous Stephanie Edwards. It's probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I think that Albertsons not bringing her along led to some of their post-merger sales problems. Here's one with her sporting Molly Ringwald hair: http://youtube.com/watch?v=61NFUwwsVv4
Ralphs
Shirley Jones was the spokesperson in the early 1980s for Ralphs. This was about the time they they started the "lower prices, higher standards" slogan which is still seen on their trucks. She filmed ads in her living room and kitchen.
Vons
As a novelty, the Spanish language ads that Bill Davila did for Vons/Tiangus would be interesting to see.
Alpha Beta
The Alan Hamill "Tell a Friend" ads would be interesting for the kitsch value. There's one at http://youtube.com/watch?v=QtOcX5tbvLg

Actually, I think the content of this very commercial was part of the reason Albertsons posted weak post-merger sales. It shows Albertsons was the highest priced supermarket surveyed in the region. 9% higher than Lucky... And I recall there were a series of these computer comparison commercials... After years of engraining this in Lucky customer's minds, ya think that had an impact when the Albertsons signs showed up?runchadrun wrote:Ads I would like to see:

Dunno if this is wishful thinking also but I would like to see a Pavilions commercial. I'm not sure if they made any with JUST Pavilions, but as a child I do remember the commercials with "Vons Pavilions" and a few short radio spots (which they still do).
Pavilions, the new, the unusal, the BEST of everything!

I would like to contribute to this post:
All vintage Safeway ads of the 1960s to the 1980s; in particular, those that used the "Since We're Neighbors, Let's Be Friends," "Everything You Want from a Store... and a Little Bit More," "America's Favorite Food Store" and "Nobody Does It Better" jingles.

Newly found video on YouTube:

Sorry David and Chad, but I'm going off on a tangent.
This is the La Cienega Bl store (now a Target)
I can't beleive how Fedco really didn't change much over the years. I remember this interior in pasadena and san bernardino. They were remodeled in the 80's (the stores only remodel as far as I can remember) to match the new stores (Ontario - my grandfather worked there).
What still surprises me is that Fedco was ALWAYS crowded and busy and still went under.
Oh, but boy were Fedco's laid out badly.

I'd love to see/hear:
Alpha Beta
What seemed like the Alpha Beta chorus singing, "Be a Friend. Tell a Friend! You should shop, Alpha Beta!"
**Would also be funny to see clips of THREE'S COMPANY...did they ever use Alpha Beta products in the kitchen? As Alan Hamel's wife is Suzanne Somers! Did they feel the "pressure" to use ABs products?!
VONS
#1
Almost chanting, "VONS double the difference offer, is your guarantee, of VONS low prices!" and then a lady replies, "and that I'd like to see!" I think SHE then gets in or out of a HUGE grocery cart!
#2
"At VONS we keep you coming back for more! VONS is the more store!"

I would love to see "Let's Go To The Races" again...Pick-N-Pay stores offered tickets with the numbers of the horses every week; if those numbers on your ticket matched the numbers on the winning horse, you won cash. Pick-N-Pay in Cleveland sponsored "Let's Go To The Races" twice, once in the 1960's and once in the 1980's.
Also I would love to see the 1960's version of "Supermarket Sweep", which was an ABC show that was shot inside a National supermarket (National Tea sponsored the ABC show). The show was later brought back by Lifetime and PAX TV, but the newer "Supermarket Sweep" was shot on a sound stage resembling a supermarket, not at actual stores like the 1960's series.

Big Star/Colonial also did that in the south in the early/mid 1970s, and I'm told Safeway did it Northern California as well. I remember the commercials, and as I recall, the races ran in a half-hour time slot on Saturday evening.Toby Radloff wrote:I would love to see "Let's Go To The Races" again...Pick-N-Pay stores offered tickets with the numbers of the horses every week; if those numbers on your ticket matched the numbers on the winning horse, you won cash.
The new version of Supermarket Sweep had fixtures supplied by Hughes Markets at the start, I remember the aisle hangers had Hughes logos on them, and they would get a billboard mention at the end of the show. After a few seasons this went away and the Hughes logos were removed from the aisle hangers.
