Too bad they didn't purchase the sites before the closed! Will be interesting to see what sites they take...as so many are vacant. They could simply move "back" in...and keep the exterior signage in place. Oakland Tribune: "Private equity firms Sun Capital Partners Inc. and Cerberus ...

Re: Thrifty Junior Drug Stores
There's a small strip mall at 1308 E. Main Street, Barstow, CA that has an odd store with a sign "ice cream parlor" and has a mostly empty interior that looks a lot like an old Thrifty's but it's less than half the size of a regular store. The main anchor, whatever that was, is now a 99 ce...

I just remembered this the other day, on a list of the worst commercials in Super Bowl history. Anyone remember "Where's Herb"?

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites
I thought I'd look at the Wikipedia page on JITB after that weird commercial during the Super Bowl. Apparently in the 80's after getting rid of the "clown", the company changed some of its stores to "Monterey Jack's". I don't remember that here in CA. It didn't work out well and ...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
I've often wondered if the JC Penney furniture store in Ontario, CA was an original build or previously another store. It seems too far from the freeway. I had also come across something about a Penney's once located on 7th Street in Victorville, CA. The last time I saw a "main street" sto...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
Probably for tire storage. What brought them into hardlines (appliances, electronics, etc) was the acquisition of General Merchandise Co. which became Treasury Stores.Brian Lutz wrote:The auto center actually has two stories (not sure what the second one is used for though.)

Re: Old JC Penney's ad
Well, the name stuck around a lot longer than 1971. I don't even remember seeing the new logo until the mid 80's. Which reminds me of the line "There's a sale at Penney's!" from the movie Airplane! in 1980.
There's also a department store named Penney's (no relation) in Ireland.

Re: Woolworth's UK in trouble?
I hadn't seen even one when I was in London about 8 years ago, and my grandmother who lived in England during WW2 thought they had gone under years ago as well. It became part of our family's discussion Thanksgiving of stores that aren't around anymore.

Re: Woolworth's UK in trouble?
Yes, it fell into "Administration" today, which is the same as bankruptcy. Woollies will be gone by year's end. They were once as popular as Walmart or Target is here today, but they've been struggling for years, and in Europe, hypermarkets have taken over.

Re: Buffalo Ranch Restaurant
Not to mention the Citibank building all boarded up. I would guess the restaurant was torn down for safety reasons, since it has been vacant for so long and would probably end up getting burned down. The whole area is going downhill and I wouldn't be surprised if Macy's pulls out of the mall next ye...

Re: Mervyns
Apparently, the GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE starts tomorrow. I heard the radio commercials, select locations only. But they've already had the "50-80% off" sales even before they decided to close. BTW, the biggest deductions are on jewelry, since a department store's markup is already high.

Re: Old Golden Corral buffets
I had never heard of Golden Corral until this discussion. Now they're opening a location near me in Hesperia, CA. When did they first come to the state, or to the West at all? I only see 3 locations in California and none in NV on their website.

The Victorville store was converted into Famsa after being vacant for a few years. They sell mostly furniture and small appliances.

Long John Silver's freestanding stores
About 6 months ago, the two LJS stores in Victorville, CA were turned into Starbucks, just as the chain was feeling the pain of having too many stores. One remains in Barstow, and a combo LJS/KFC opened several miles away. I hadn't noticed until now that the freestanding stores are disappearing. I a...
