Correction on Alpha-Beta Monterey Park. It was the Asian Supermarket just north of the Ralphs on the west side of Atlantic.. The Ralphs was actually a Hughes market. This Alpha Beta closed in the 80's right around the time Safeway was closed, and was vacant for years. The old tower where Alphie onc...

Why is the San Francisco Safeway store the prototype of the Marina store when it opened in 1959, yet the Safeway in Highland Park opened in June of 1955 and has the same design? It is located at 5610 York Blvd in Highland Park, Calif. When I worked in the Safeway Southern California division from 1...

Found this photo of a Homeland store somewhere around Shawnee, Oklahoma; not sure if this was a 1970s Safeway or not. http://www.news-star.com/images/122803/bus_homelandLR.jpg My guess is an 80's Safeway (or remodeled in the 80's). That's almost exactly what the Safeway on Santa Monica Blvd. in Wes...

The interior started with an earthtone package that was standard for Safeways at the time. Just plane white walls with big lettering in italics announcing the departments. It also...

Re: Pavilions
That's cool that you remember the Garden Grove Pavilions. It was the first store in the chain and replaced an existing and very successful old Vons in the same shopping center. I thought the Monrovia store was the first Pavilions. At least that's what I was led to believe. If I remember right the f...

The salad bar/mexican food(?), many service depts, huge delis, more personalized service, fresher. I loved...

The Pavilions is in a great location since it's walking distance to a lot of the apartments (and bars) in Boys Town. It's also at the end of the LA Pride parade and I know I've stood in lines to buy water on pride day. I bet their liquor department is one of the higher-grossing stores in the chain....
