Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV
I like film, especially period documentaries, "shock" films, etc. In Sid Davis' film, "Boys Beware" there is an exterior shot of Inglewood Food Fair as were as other store fronts, and a drive-in about 2:52 into the films. Sid Davis filmed in Sothern California on ridiculously low...

Re: Fotomat
I've seen a few ex-Fotomats still around as well as some former Fox Photo Express units being used for things as diverse as automobile window tinting stores, cigarette stores, locksmiths/key replacements, coffee kiosks, florists, and even tennis racket restringing shops. Some are still largely recog...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida
Publix did have food world stores in Florida. I think they closed them in the early to mid 80's if I remember correctly. They used the Food World brand as second private label on bread and I think a few other Items for a long time after they closed the stores. The packaging looked almost exactly li...

Re: Kentucky Roast Beef?
...there was a chain in Florida called Beefy King. The red-and-gold signs with a crown at the top were a lot more impressive than the buildings that they advertised. I know there was one in Cocoa, one in Melbourne, and one in Orlando, and possibly others. ... The restaurants closed by 1976. Actuall...

Re: Pic-n-Save/Setzers
The only Pic-n-Save I recall visiting in Florida was in Longwood back in 1989 or 1990. I don't know what ultimately became of the store since I left in 1991. The store was huge for its time. The logo they used was a yellow/gold seal with serrated teeth and the store name in emblazoned in the middle ...

Bulk Food Warehouse
I remember this operation from back in the 80s. There were a few stores in Central Florida, but I also know they were found elsewhere in the USA and possibly Canada. Typically they were small storefronts within a strip shopping center, smaller than most new build Aldi stores. The ones I saw had all ...

Re: Atlanta History Solicited
... Just today on the Atlanta news, a story was done about the first "bi-lingual" Publix that had their grand opening in Gwinnett County today. The story mentioned that Publix had success with this concept in a few Florida locations, but that this was the first store of its type in Georgi...

Re: Chveron Stations Operating as Standard Oil
... I seem to recall from the 70s that Standard Oil would be listed/painted/displayed upon the service island's "cross beam", with Chevron on the main signs. Am I remembering correctly? I can speak from some of my observations of stations in the 60s and 70s of Standard Oil of Kentucky (KY...

Re: Chveron Stations Operating as Standard Oil
I don't know where the Georgia location is now, but for many years it was the Standard station on the southeast corner of Akers Mill Road and Cobb Parkway (US 41) near Cumberland Mall in Cobb County. It was torn down years ago, and briefly had a Krispy Kreme on the edge of the property. I, too, woul...

Re: Atlanta History Solicited
... Winn-Dixie operated in Atlanta as discounter during the trading stamp era and never bothered to pick up S&H or Top Value stamps as they sometimes did in other places. Louisville was one market where they dropped S&H stamps back in the 60s and operated this way, as well. Actually Winn-Di...

And off this topic, but at least directly across the street... was also an A&P. ... I'm not sure when the A&P closed, but at least for a bit in the 80s there was a new-build Family Mart a bit to the west on FL 520...not sure of the exact spot, but I think it was not too far from the Mercury...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida
The original post referred to a store on Merritt Island. There were two older Publix stores on Merritt Island. The first store, opened in 1963, was on North Courtney Pike and was a small winged-front store. This store closed in the late seventies, and a long period sat unchanged [and abandoned]. It...

Was Western Auto with merchandise other than car parts similar to True Value or something like that? In addition to auto parts and related items, some of the stores carried small appliances, gadgets, and even things like Adams magic tricks (marked cards, dice, etc.). I think it was up to each store...

Re: Musicland/Defunct Record Store Chains Other Than Tower
One more I forgot about was Franklin Music (or was it Franklin Sound); at least in the Atlanta area they had several stores. They were one of the first retailers in Atlanta to use some sort of barcode reading technology (along with Richway) in the early 70's...their barcodes were the two color type ...
