Is it possible that St. Louis never became a full fledged division, but rather an expansion of the Kansas City division and the stores eventually closing before becoming numerous enough to sustain a division? Safeway's Little Rock division operated stores in the Memphis region during the 70's, quick...

Safeway had a Toronto division until the 80's, so some marinas may be scattered throughout southern Ontario. Ontario still has some Safeways in the western region, Thunder Bay I think has 2, as part of the Winnipeg division. P.S. you're also in this months issue of Supermarket News regarding Dark St...

I believe the Standard chains was once independent of National, but became the banner after acquired. The Standard banner lasted until the mid-80's. By the time the stores closed, Indianapolis was the last holdout. During the Depression to the early post-WWII era, Standard, A&P, and Kroger were ...

I'm pretty sure Montezuma had a Colonial until the 70's or 80's, most Georgia towns of 3000 or more did at one point during their peak. I believe Manchester had an A&P that had closed in the early 70's, a small pre-Centenniel supermarket. A&P had the second largest number of stores in Georgi...

Visited the sole remaining Eckerd in Dalton today. It was the most recent freestanding construct, from 1998 or 99, and is very similar in layout to the Dalton Walgreen's with less convenience food and a larger 1-hr photofinishing department. The store was not at all busy and the only register open w...

Dave Thomas was involved at some level with Arthur Treacher's between leaving KFC and starting Wendy's though his association was brief. AT's was briefly in my area, but dissappeared after the arrival of Long John Silver's and Captain D's, the two dominant seafood chains in the South. Southeast Flor...

The exterior has a vague feel of Colonial, though the corrugated metal is missing. The shingle roofing is not original and may cover more telling evidence. It definitely feels and looks like a grocery store and not a drug store or hardware store. A 5&10 is possible, but the design is supermarket...

Kroger is a good guess, but I'm not sure the pylon tower is rare for Kroger. Colonial is a possibility as is Winn-Dixie or one of its predecessors. A&P could have had a pre-centennial store there, but they usually lacked the pylon tower.. I'm not sure if Food Fair/Pantry Pride was ever that far ...

It's sad to see Eckerd go, but the chain is not the Eckerd of yesteryear and has a lot of catch up to do. I don't think Rite Aid is going to be an improvement. The closest Rite Aid to Dalton is Calhoun and the parking lot is always empty. It is a free standing new construct that was part of their in...

It's a cool looking store that could still pass for a contemporary store today.
The exterior has a little "Jestsonesque" styling, just raise it up above the Bay Area fog on pole, lol.

Outside of Florida, a supermarket deli was unheard of until the 1970's. For much of the southeast, Kroger's rollout of the superstore format was often the first grocer with a deli-bakery and extended operating hours. In the south, Publix operated Dutch bakeries in the 1960's and didn't really push d...

I've been in the last Big Star in Manchester several times as a child, when my family would camp at FDR State Park. I know the store became an A&P after 1992, but I'm not sure when it closed. I would have expected Food Lion(or Harvey's) to have built in Manchester by now and possibly Ingles' whi...

Very possibly these were either part of the Alterman's chain of Big Apple/Food Giant stores of Atlanta or independents supplied by Alterman Brothers wholesale operation, two different companies same family. Re: Macon Georgia area History (Kroger)

Kroger Milledgeville, Ga, former BI-Lo location, became Kroger in late 1990's and retains the original Bi-Lo archeticture. This was an early 1990's Bi-Lo locaiton in a shopping center. The Milledgeville location was constructed in the early 90's as a Food Lion and soon was sold to BiLo when Food Li...

I've always been curious if the 1980's Winn-Dixie was the site of the scene in "Fried Green Tomatoes" where Kathy Bates in her Towanda moment "accidently" hits the VW that hogged the space she waiting for 6 times? I recall the Milledgeville location having Spanish Mission archite...
