Re: Macon Georgia area History (Kroger)

'. North Avenue, Baconsfield shopping Center. (1980's) this store is a greenhouse location and once had a bank and a cafe'. The Cafe' was briefly a Popeye's chicken. This location is the closest to downtown and was a replacement for the smaller former Downtown locations. The Emery Highway location ...

They were never national. They probably reached their maximum geographic coverage around the early 1960s, unless you count their forced merger with the the remnants of Colonial Stores in the 80s. Any details on this merger? What I've read is that it was first announced in 1978, immediately followin...

The "Big Chicken" in Marietta

IIRC, the KFC in Marietta began as an independent chicken restaurant that became a KFC in the 1960's and the Big Chicken predates the location being a KFC. The eyes originally wiggled but caused considerable vibration in the tower and were turned off, I think the beak may have crowed as well. The st...

Yes I think Jacksonville, FL and Mobile, AL had Welcome stores as well.
They seemed to be in markets on the periphery of established Kroger markets.

Hey, krogerclerk, how new is that Kroger in downtown Savannah? It's been so long since I've been there. My only experience with Kroger in Savannah was in 1994-ish when Mom and I were down there for a weekend and needed a few things. Nobody we asked could seem to tell us how to find a grocery store....

Savannah area old stores

Most Piggly Wiggly locations in the Savannah area are of older vintage. Piggly Wiggly Carolina is the operator and I suspect many are former Colonial/Big Star and Winn-Dixie locations, both chains closed in Savannah/Chatham Co. in the early 80's. Kroger has two vintage late 70's/early 80's Kroger Sa...

The blue oval is virtuall identical to the Kroger oval, which I do believe was used by SupeRx. I believe SupeRX had a sizable store count in Arizona at one timeand this was probably a peripheral location. SupeRx had stores in state that didn't have Kroger as well as states which Kroger had vacated, ...

I'm leaning more toward A&P. This looks very similar to stores they had in the Atlanta area in the 1980's. It's very similar to the former Memorial Drive A&P which replaced a colonial A&P. The store closed as A&P just prior to A&P buying the Big Star locations from Grand Union. ...

I went in an independent grocer in North Myrtle Beach, SC that was also a hardware store as well. I don't remember if was Ace or True Value but I'm leaning to the latter. I was located along the beach as the chains, Kroger Sav-On, A&P, Harris-Teeter and Food Lion were along Kings )Highway(US 17)...

Former KMart Foods

Seeing the pictures of the ex-KMart Foods reminded me of the Kroger in Kingsport, TN, obviously in a former KMart Foods. The exterior was very similar to the phots Adam provided of the Weis stores, but the interior was 1980's greenhouse Kroger. Nearby was an empty superstore-era Kroger, but I'm not ...

I believe it was the last operating A&P in Columbia, closing in the early 90's after FoodMax and Harris-Teeter entered the market and just prior to the arrival of Publix. But the facade is very Winn-Dixie-like and could have possibly originated as W-D.

No the store next to Target(nee Richway), was Big Star, then A&P and lastly Harris-Teeter. IIRC, the old Ogletree's was across from the current Kroger/Bruno's on Sandy Springs Cir. Kroger does currently hold the lease on the vacant H-T. and utilizes it for storage, etc. I never went to Merchant'...

Ogletree's and Alabama Food Giant

Ogletree's became part of Bruno's in c. 1987, operated as Ogletree's Fine Foods then Bruno's Fine Foods. I am familiar with 3 locations, though more existed. Sandy Plains at Shalllowford(across from a Big Lots in a former Food Giant and a mid-80's greenhouse Kroger), Dunwoody-divided into a now clos...

Sorry to say I know of none. An intact exterior remained in Nashville until early this year when it became a Dollar General Market. It had received an interior remodel using the mauve/grid color scheme. It's replacement opened in October 2004, and the store stayed open about 4 months until the deal ...
