Re:
This is the same location as the current Safeway at 1655 S El Camino Real. However, the original store was demolished and the current store built in 1983. I never saw the original store, so I don't know if it was a marina or a gable. While we're on the subject of the former Norfolk st. store, that ...

Acme in the DC area
Till I started frequenting this forum: I never realized that Acme was still around. Note the only one that I remember while growing up in the Wash DC area was the store in Arlington that shut down ca. 1973. It was on Sycamore by Williamsburg Blvd near the old WEAM AM radio field. Typo fixed (I hope).

Re: Super Fresh in DC
What bugs me is that PA people go to NJ and DE where the "liquor" stores sell more beer, cigarettes, and lottery tickets than wine and spirits. And I never knew there was a Montgomery County in Maryland... but I am familiar with the one in PA, born in the one in Texas. The only Cherry Hil...

Re: HOWS closing all but one site
Wow: I forgot all about Hughes out of SoCal..........they went out ca. 1984? They were bought out by Ralphs around 1999 IIRC. I was wondering. I do remember the store near Venice Beach (Washington Blvd?) closing down ca. 1984-86 hence my thinking the whole company went out. Note I lived in Pico Riv...

I was not as happy with HOWS prices compared to the old Hughes chain. They were definitely more expensive and even though the quality was good, it still didn't beat Hughes.

Re: Baskin Robbins signs
My favorite BR logo was the one using 'old US cowboy west' style block letters. That went out, what, 25 years ago? http://www.baskinrobbins.com/About/OurHistory.aspx Scroll down towards the bottom of BR's history page. :) The "circus" logo was designed in 1959 and was BR's longest-standin...

Defunct Sprouse-Reitz in Superior, Az.
I snapped this pic earlier today; I am guessing that this Sprouse-Reitz in Superior, Az. went away back in the 1980's at the latest.

Kmart:
Note that my info is at least 4 years old here: the one in Bullhead City, Az had that funky little popcorn 'deli' (may have been Little Caesar's) @ the front and the Lake Havasu City store hah/has(?) a small eatery that served hamburgers, etc.

Re: MONTGOMERY WARDS STILL ALIVE
Still have my WARDS charge cards. NEVER used them. The San Bernardino CA store is still sitting vacant. The West Covina CA site was demolished/transformed into IKEA, which had moved from the City of Industry. The City of Industry IKEA was demolished. Wow. When I lived in Pico Rivera in the late 198...

There was (is?) a Sizzler in Flagstaff, Az. as of a few years ago. Not sure if there are any others left here in Arizona.

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites
I remember my first Jack on Rte 7 at the extreme S end of Arlington @ the Alexandra line from the 1970's and it was not new back then. I want to say it was close to where George Mason Dr ended. This was in the Wash DC area.

Re: Baskin Robbins signs
I have seen a few which still retain the old sign frames you describe, but the "Baskin-Robbins" portion on some has been completely removed from the building. I haven't seen the new signage anywhere around here. In fact, I haven't seen a new-build, standalone Baskin Robbins in years. It s...

Re: Vintage Tyson's Corner
Old thread I realize but; I used to hang out at both Tysons as well as Springfield Mall as late as 1978, the year I left the DC area for California. A friend of mine used to work at the Lums there, we used to refer to it as S lums. :) Back to Tysons itself: I remember my parents taking me there ca. ...

Re: Shopping Centers in Popular Culture
"How to Beat the High Cost of Living", from 1980 (but shot in 1979), is perfect for this. It revolves around three women who try to rob a ball of money (promotional contest) in a mall. It was shot in Oregon at Eugene's Valley River Center. I haven't seen it in years, but if memory serves,...
