Re: Anybody Want to Buy a Slightly Used Kmart? (Bellevue, WA)

I don't really know anything about the history of this particular store, since I've only lived here since 1994. Eventually I'll get a chance to do some more research, and I'll probably stumble onto this at some point.

Anybody Want to Buy a Slightly Used Kmart? (Bellevue, WA)

I just thought I'd point out a Blog post I made last night about the former Kmart in Bellevue, WA, which closed during the bankruptcy in 2002, and has sat vacant ever since. Costco has twice come up with possible plans for the site (once to use the existing building for some sort of concept store ba...

Re: Lucky in Albuquerque

During what time frame was this? Having lived in NM for the first sixteen years of my life (1978-1995), I was never aware of a Lucky store being in Albuquerque or Santa Fe (although I lived in Los Alamos, so I could have just missed it.) As far as I can recall, the Skaggs Alpha Beta locations all be...

Re: Circuit City

The one here in Bellevue uses a different variation on the "straight plug" style that isn't listed here (it seems they took the angled plug design and just added a straight front to it.)

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

Otter Pops are still alive and well, but they seem to be something of a seasonal item in most places (for example, Costco regularly carries the big 200 count boxes between roughly April and August, but not during the Fall and Winter.)

Re: Old Dairy Queen signs

The local Dairy Queen has a bunch of vintage photos on the wall that were added as part of the most recent remodel (I believe this location was originally built in the mid to late 70s.) There are still a couple of 60s Dairy Queens in the area that haven't received much in the way of remodeling (the ...

Re: Shopping Centers in Popular Culture

There's always the Dixie Square Mall as seen in The Blues Brothers where they did a whole car chase through the mall. You can probably YouTube the clip of that one.

Re: PayLess Drugs (Northwest)

The vast majority of the current Rite Aid (former Payless) stores around here happen to be carryovers from the old Pay 'n Save. The Pay 'n Save brand existed from 1941-1988, and the company also owned a number of other brands including Lamonts, Pay 'n Pak, Ernst Hardware, Malmo Nursery, Sportswest a...

Re: Chains with two stores very close to each other

I mentioned this one in another thread, but here in Redmond there are two QFC (a Kroger-owned brand) stores within roughly three blocks of each other. One was around before my family moved here, and the other became a QFC in 1995 after a merger with a small local/regional chain called Olson's. Both ...

Re: Disappearing Sizzlers in your area

I only know of one Sizzler around here, which is in Tukwila near Southcenter Mall. I haven't ever been to that one (the only Sizzler I've been to in the past couple of years was down in Utah where they seem to be all over the place,) but apparently there are others in the Southern Puget Sound region...

Re: Mayfair Market in Century City

A number of the supermarkets here still have this style of windows, although I've noted that some (particulary Safeways) have covered up large portions of these windows with reflective film, presumably for this reason. For example, if you take a look at some of the photos from my Blog post on the Be...

Re: Former Boston Market locations in your area

Boston Markets with drive-thrus (at least the freestanding ones) were the norm around here. Some of the former locations even still have the drive-thrus although they are no longer being used for anything. One got turned into a Blockbuster Video and kind of halfheartedly stuck a rental return drop b...

Re: Goodbye Mervyns?

It's been about two years since the Mervyn's stores around here closed down. Several have been reoccupied. The freestanding store here in Redmond is a Kohl's now, and the one up in Lynwood (also a freestanding store across from Alderwood Mall) is being turned into an H-Mart (a Korean grocery store c...

Re: Albertsons Hemet, CA closing.

More importantly on the history front, Albertsons/Supervalu seems to be in a store closing mood again, at least here in SoCal. I doubt they are done. They are in a closing/cost cutting mood in the Northwest too. In addition to a recently closed store in The Dalles, Oregon, I happened to see that th...

Re: Former Boston Market locations in your area

There is at least one former Kenny Rogers Roasters around here in Federal Way WA (ironically enough, also directly across the street from a former Boston Market) that turned into a Japanese steak house. The Boston Market there got split into an indie coffee shop and a Qdoba Mexican Grill.
