The Safeway in Eugene, OR at 145 E. 18th and Pearl was reconstructed in 2002. This involved the demolition of all but two walls, which I'm guessing are the back wall and the right wall that touches the neighboring drug store;

That was originally a Mayfair Market that opened in 1952 and closed for an unknown reason (I think even acording to the newspaper article) in 1961. I thought I read that this became a discount/drug-type establishment in 1963, though no name was mentioned. I guess that could have been a two-year wind...

What timing; the neighboring Rite Aid (former early 1960s Payless) closed when Rite Aid relocated across the street in June.

It seems as if the Hahn company had at least a limited stake in the shopping center throughout its life (which meant a stake in its legal woes) as evidenced by these articles; http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/e/a/1995/02/03/PENINSUL14620.dtl&hw=fashion+island+hahn&sn=002&sc=8...

Unfortunately, the SF gate archives only go back to 1995. The development is an interesting story, and one that I found in a book in the San Mateo library about the city's history. It was developed by the Hahn company, which is confirmed here, although it actually opened in 1981, except for the Libe...

Safeway was still building marina prototypes at the time (Mission Street in SF opened that year)...I'm thinking that store and the Park Mall store in Pacific were two of the earliest, 1970s-style shake roof buildings. Actually, even some Safeways from deep in the 1960s that conformed to their shopp...

The main, or King, library in downtown San Jose, on the fifth floor. You'd like this; in addition to those shopping center guides, the California room has more indexed newspaper clippings than any other library I've been to. You can view articles on microfiche about virtually any Thrifty, Lucky, Emp...

I e-mailed the author of that website that exact question sometime back, and he replied that the Safeway did have an arched roof. As for the date, I know for sure that the Thrifty opened between May 1962 and April 1963, but the Wurster, Bernardi and Emmons spreadsheet listed that shopping center as ...

Thank you for the photo. You're right, that is the Shattuck Ave. Safeway; one feature that distinguishes is from the typical Marina Safeway is the large, flat overhang and entry foyer that it has, and appears to have always had, on the front. This Safeway has a plaque near the left entrance with its...

After examining a photo of the closed Albany, OR Safeway that I took while I was on the train and comparing it to the mystery closed Oregon Safeway, I am 99% sure that the abandoned Safeway pictured is the Albany Safeway. The red stripes along the windows were the biggest, but not the only, giveaway...
