Country Club
The Woolworth's at Country Club Centre in Sacramento must predate the one across the street at Country Club Plaza. When I lived there in the mid-70s, there was no longer a Wooworth's at CCC, only at CCP. The one in CCP (two levels, with escalator) is now a Ross.

Stouffer's
The Hilton Hotel at Washington National Airport used to be a Stouffer's also.

Store Brands
I'm 54 and was born and raised in the Bay Area, so believe me, I remember Bel-Air, Empress, Town House, Truly Fine, Lucerne, etc. (And Lady Lee, Harvest Day, etc.) I'm sure I ate my share of Bel-Air frozen pies in my day.

Menu
That menu is a real hoot! It has '50s/June Cleaver/Donna Reed written all over it. Frozen Bel-Air Peach Pie. Apricot Nectar and Lime Sherbet. And, my favorite: "Special Herb Salad." I can only imagine what someone today would think of with that name. Sounds like something from the Cheech a...

Shakey's
They seem to be rebranding/remodeling. I've seen two stores recently that were either new builds or remodels that had a new logo with "Shakey's Pizza and Grill."

Sears
Sears used to own a lot of mall properties under their Homart Deveopment Co. division. (Homart was also a brand name they used for water heaters and other appliances.) I'm fairly certain that Arden Fair was a Homart property as well. Sears sold Homart to General Growth Properties (a major mall owner...

Former Lucky in Monrovia (CA)
There was a Lucky store in Monrovia on Huntington Dr. and Mayflower (across Mayflower from the Huntington Oaks Center.) It closed about 8-10 years ago when a large Lucky/Sav-On (now Albertsons/Sav-On) was built farther east on Huntington. This store has been sitting empty (as far as I can tell) all ...

Nationwide
Has anyone ever come up with reasons why we seem to have many virtually nationwide drugstore chains (CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid) but no real national supermarket (at least under one name)?

Great site!
Love your blog! I tried to leave a comment there, but couldn't figure out how to do so without creating a blogger account. Anyway, one correction with respect to the article on Lakewood Center: Sav-On is a drugstore chain, not a supermarket. Although with the recent purchase of Albertson's by SuperV...

Arcadia and Duarte
I don't think the problem is with the Alpha Beta addresses, it's with the addresses of the current tenants. According to the 99 Cents Only stores website, the Arcadia location is at 140 E. Duarte Rd. And Mike's Food's address is, indeed 1322 E. Huntington Dr. Big Lots in Duarte is at 1325 E. Hunting...

Arcadia and Duarte
Arcadia - 140 E. Duarte, now Grand Slam Sports Center Duarte - 1322 E. Huntington Dr., now Big Lots Unless there was more than one Alpha Beta, these two seem wrong to me. The Alpha Beta in Arcadia was on Duarte Rd. and Second Ave., and became a 99 Cents Only store, and remains so today. The Alpha B...

Sunrise/Winding
What grocer was at Sunrise and Winding? Was that an Albertsons? As far as I know,I don't know if there was ever a supermarket at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard at Winding Way in Fair Oaks.I could be wrong. Do you mean Sunrise and Winding or Sunrise and Fair Oaks? I believe the building on the sout...

Superior-Covina
Covina used to be a Smith's market, later Lucky's that closed when they were bought by Albertsons. Are you sure about that? The only Smith's I remember in Covina was the one on Azusa Ave. that became an Albertson's. I think the Superior store in Covina opened as one of those large Lucky/Sav-On comb...

Sambo's in Davis
There was a Sambo's in downtown Davis, CA (2nd and B Sts.) when I was in college there in the early 70s. Of course, with Davis being a college town, and with all of the controversy about the name, the restaurant had some problems during that time. I don't remember what happened to it.

I know the Petrini's in the Rheem Shopping Center in Moraga became an Apple Market. I don't know what's there now.
