Pavilions

That's cool that you remember the Garden Grove Pavilions. It was the first store in the chain and replaced an existing and very successful old Vons in the same shopping center.

I thought the Monrovia store was the first Pavilions. At least that's what I was led to believe.

Alpha Beta to 99 Cents Only

Many old grocery stores in the Greater Los Angeles area transformed into 99-cent Only stores - a great number of those being former Ralphs stores that they acquired during its buy-out of Alpha Beta. Examples of those would be in Azusa (in the Foothill Center, on Alosta Blvd. & Citrus Ave.) and ...

Stater Bros. in LA County

store #15 Whittier at the corner of mulberry and mills, was one of only two in L A County before the aqusition of the former Lucky/Albertsons stores. The stores in Azusa (Alosta and Barranca) and LaVerne (Foothill Blvd.) both seem to me like they pre-date the Lucky/Albertsons divestiture. Am I wron...

Stamps in the Bay Area

I grew up in the East Bay in the 50s and 60s and only remember Blue Chip and S&H, with Blue Chip being more prevalent. I also remember that everyone considered it a shocking move when Lucky was the first of the major chains to stop giving stamps, as part of their changeover to the "Everyday...

The Akron

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but weren't there Akrons in the Bay Area as well? I seem to recall one in the Fishermen's Wharf area -- maybe at the North Point shopping center? And also in San Jose. Anyone?

East Coast Chains

And there was always talk of another East Coast chain-- Lord & Taylor-- coming to California (and Las Vegas.) With all the shake ups of Federated and May, I doubt that will ever come about.

FedMart

When I moved to LA County in 1987, there were no longer any FedMarts. I do remember Fedco, however, which was also a general retail/grocery combination, and which also had the majority of its stores and/or locations taken over by Target.

Pantry

There was one located on the NW corner of Huntington and Mt. Olive in Duarte. It was owned by Vons (along with Williams Bros., Pavilions, and Tianguis), at least when I arrived in the area in 1987. the site was later divided, and one side was home to a Farrs Hallmark/Stationers, which also closed. I...

Lucky-Orinda

The original Lucky was on Camino Pablo, just north of where it begins and splits off from Moraga Way (which was called Moraga Highway back in the day.) To clarify further, it was in the triangular parcel bordered by Camino Pablo, Moraga Highway, and Brookwood Road, on the downhill side. When Lucky m...

Oh!rbach's & Stor

Oh!rbach's (The exclamation point was part of their logo in later years.) I could be mis-remembering, but I thought Ohrbach's was still around for a year or two after I moved to the LA area in late 1987. I was only aware of the Glendale, Cerritos, Del Amo and Wilshire stores. And I still have a char...

Supermarket Curiosity

A large part of my interest is nostalgic, and I'm interested in all kinds of retail businesses from the past, not just markets. But I've always been interested in supermarkets in other parts of the country. Perhaps because before I moved to the east coast at age 28, I'd never been farther east than ...

Pre-Vons Safeway

I've mentioned this before on these boards, but the only pre-Vons Safeway I'm familiar with was the one in the Huntington Oaks Shopping Center (with Mervyns, now-defunct movie theaters, and several other stores) in Monrovia. It lasted about a year as a Vons, then later became a Marshalls, and remain...

Rheem & Moraga

Wow! I can't believe someone else remembers Clarks' Market! We moved to Orinda (on the side of town closest to Moraga) in 1956. There were no supermarkets in Moraga proper (i.e., the area where Moraga Highway-- now Moraga Way--ends). But I remember Clark's in Rheem, and Lucky and Black's at the Orin...

Memco

When I moved to Northern Va. in 1978, I don't think my local Memco (Braddock and Little River Tpk.) had a gas station. That store later became a Bradlee's, then a Hechinger. I don't know what it is these days.
