Re: Acme in New York
Yes, Loblaws opened in the mall out on the arterial (NYS Rte 30-A) in the fall of 1972. It was closed by the summer of 1976 and Price Chopper moved in that fall and remains there to this day and have expanded the store at least twice in the interim and now even have a drive thru pharmacy sort of on ...

Found those photos of the former SaveWay (P+C) in Reid Hill Plaza. These were taken over five years ago:

Re: End of an era: Curry Plaza demolished
Is that Amsterdam plaza anywhere near the main shopping areas (on Rt. 30)? I'm guessing maybe not? No, it's actually in a residential area of the city in the area of Route 67 and Chruch St. I'm guesstimating it opened sometime in the early mid-60's. I was born in '62 and maybe a year or two after t...

Re: End of an era: Curry Plaza demolished
It sounds like this site has been abandoned longer than it was occupied. That is certainly true of the Gloversville Loblaws which opened sometime in the mid 50's and closed in February of 1975 when they moved to a new store downtown. That building stood vacant for OVER 40 years-WOW! And one of the ...

Re: End of an era: Curry Plaza demolished
Don't know if it's even being considered for demolition, but there's a small strip in Amsterdam, NY called Reid Hill Plaza located at what's known as the "5 corners." It consisted of a supermarket (first a Save-Way and later P+C which closed at some point in the mid-late '90's), a drug sto...

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s
Don't forget the store in Margaretville which actually hung on until only a few years ago. And yes I believe 1981 was really the last huge purge before things quieted down for a while because I recall the Gloversville store staying open until almost the end of that year which ended their presence lo...

Re: New location list: Albany through 1960
On that Stuyvesant Plaza store Billy Gr mentioned, yes it did open as an Acme in I'm going to say 1959. I found an article from 1962 a while ago which said that Acme sold the store to Golub Corp. which operated the Central Market chain and which we all know as Price Chopper today. The article implie...

Re: Gloversville Loblaw's finally getting demolished
There was at one time I believe because I think that company bought the building. Don't know if they still own it though. Drove by there yesterday afternoon and except for a few old RV's in the far corner of the parking lot, it's completely empty.Ampersand wrote:is there like security for an empty building?

Re: Gloversville Loblaw's finally getting demolished
The "new" Loblaws opened in February 1975 closed in very early 1977 when Chicago Markets (that was the small chain based in Utica) moved in. They were then purchased by Victory Markets in the later 80's and the store was totally remodeled and branded Great American then closed in 1995. It ...

Re: Gloversville Loblaw's finally getting demolished
Correction on that-it IS demolished and construction of the new Stewart's is in full swing and will probably be open by early December. That building stood empty for OVER 40 YEARS with most of the signage remaining intact-especially on the "tower" on the side of the building. I don't mind ...

Re: A&p files for bankruptcy: five LI stores closing
Surprising Acme would want stores in New York state. I know they've operated there before but it was some time ago. Would've thought Shop Rite might get involved in this but perhaps they will eventually. Sorry to see it end this way for "Grandma."
