Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
Regarding popcorn, in the pre-microwave oven era, it used to be sold in stove top packets. As I recall, one placed the aluminum container into a frying pan and popped the corn via stove top conduction. I don't think popcorn is sold this way anymore. That was Jiffy Pop popcorn, which I think is still...

Brands like Rinso, Breeze, Ipana, etc. Unilever, in particular, still sells many of these old brands, in their old packaging in "developing" countries. Don't know if they use the old formulations. I once sat on a plane, next to a Unilever sales rep whose brand portfolio was mostly stuff I'...

Rego's closed this store in the early 1980's, then Medic Drug operated there for many years. When Medic folded, they closed this location, and Rego reopened there.

Re: Korvettes: "Top Hits" 45RPM Records
I think most discount stores from the 1960's to 1980's used jobbers to service their record and tape departments. I recall that Camelot Music (now FYE) once serviced Clarkins, the former Akron-based discounter. Most of the LP's used letter codes to identify prices, both at Camelot and at Clarkins, a...

Re: Phar-Mor
As for Youngstown area Phar-Mor's, Marc's took over the Austintown location...Marc's is a similar operation to Phar-Mor. A flea market, which recycled part of the Phar-Mor signage (I think the flea market was called "Flea-Mor"), is in the former Niles location across from Eastwood Mall, an...

Re: Chains with two stores very close to each other
After Gray Drug took over the Cunningham Drug stores in NE OH, there were at least several locations where Gray continued to operate stores that were nearby or adjacent; usually it would be the original Gray store that would close while the acquired Cunningham would continue to operate. For at least...

Defunct home improvement chains in OH include Forest City Materials, which was once a division of real estate developer/home builder Forest City Enterprises, which is still very much in business. Forest City Enterprises sold the Forest City home improvement stores to Chicago-based Handy Andy, in whi...
