The Ala Moana Center in Honolulu has a FoodLand grocery store. Although in the mall proper, I believe access to FoodLand is only from the outside. Other anchors include Sears, Neiman Marcus, Shirokiya (with a great bakery and food court), the ubiquitus Macy's (formerly Liberty House, with 2 great re...

Stater Bros. had quite a few locations in OC before the Albertsons/Lucky merger - 2 in Santa Ana come to mind: Edinger at Fairview and 17th/Fairview. Also one in Yorba Linda or Placentia. And another one in South Whittier (yeah, I know it's technically not OC, but I'm guessing they had even fewer lo...

No, it was FedCo that was a membership store, kind of like a Costco. Pricier and more restricted than Gemco (what did they do with that dollar, anyway?). FedMart was a warehouse-y, non-membership grocery store. Big red sign with white letters, as I recall. I'm pretty sure FedMart and FedCo were not ...

It's been at least 20 years, so I might be wrong here, but the FedMart I remember most clearly (in La Habra) was about 90% food items / sundries / liquor. Not at all like a Target or (my understanding of a ) Super WalMart. No clothing section, jewelry, toys, furniture. But I also vaguely recall a ga...

McCoy's Market, Whittier
This was a ranch-style market on Leffingwell Road just west of Santa Gertrudes. I'm pretty sure it was where the UHaul now stands. As a kid in the 1970s I used to get my hair cut at the adjoining barber shop (John's?) near the Mobil Station while mom shopped. There is a "Puffy Taco" on the...

The Pantry - Southern CA
I only remember the one in the Sunny Hills area of Fullerton (NW corner of Harbor and Bastanchury, now a Longs Drugs). It seemed slightly upscale. But I remember full page ads in the paper, so they must have had more locations.
Any others? Anyone else remember this one?

FedMart Southern California?
I remember a discounter in the 1970s called FedMart. Kind of an early warehouse store. There was one on Lincoln Ave in Anaheim (west of Euclid Ave.) now a Target and one on the northwest corner of Beach Blvd. and Imperial Highway in La Habra (entire shopping center now demolished and replaced with a...

WOW! I always assumed that the reflective facade of Mervyns visible from the 605 freeway was something added in the 80s. It is strangely modern and doesn't match the rest of the mall at all. I never set foot in an Ohrbachs. What kind of store was it? Would you compare it to a Mervyns? The old Broadw...

I'm guessing that you're talking about the Hughes/Ralphs on West Whittier Blvd (near Idaho). Do you happen to know if the Big Lots (former PicNSave) on the northeast corner of Harbor/La Habra was also a Market Basket. The woven tower logo has always made me think that it was. And there was another m...

Safeway opened a location in La Habra on the southwest corner of Imperial and Idaho in the mid-80s. It became a Vons a few years after opening. Around the same time a Smiths opened a few blocks west on the northwest corner of Imperial and Beach. When they pulled out of Southern California, this loca...

There was a Jewel-T store in La Habra, CA on the southwest corner of Beach Blvd. and La Habra Blvd. I remember shopping there as a kid. It was the first warehouse-type chain around. I remember having to pack your own groceries in the recycled cardboard boxes they provided. The location is now a Salv...
