Former Big Star/Colonial Locations Still Selling Groceries

Just curious as to how many former Big Star and Colonial locations still house grocers. A few I'm aware of that do: -- Charlotte NC (Park Road Shopping Center): Now Harris-Teeter. -- Charlotte NC (North Graham Street): Now Wayne's Supermarket. -- Charlotte NC (Eastway Plaza): Now Save-a-Lot. -- Wins...

Ditto San Francisco, albeit a small one. It's a fairly common name nationwide, actually, up there with Food Town and Food City.

Atlanta

For those who are interested, I added a post focusing on Atlanta chains in 1978 on the site today. I'd love to expand on it here (in anticipation of a future Atlanta section on the site) if anyone's interested in a discussion:

I believe that this was actually a Mayfair market, at least as of the late 1960s (does that explain a lot?). You're absolutely right. The center itself opened in 1955, and was even known in 1964 as the "Mayfair Center". I can't confirm the subsequent tenants, but your assessment makes a l...

Once again, let's please keep this focused on the HISTORY of the chain, not its current operations. I'll have to close the thread otherwise.

Thanks,

Re: New Uses for Grocery Stores

Isn't it more interesting to talk about unusual, non-retail conversions, per the original post? Sorry to be a pain, but this has gotten pretty far off the subject, in my opinion. Can we at least agree that a supermarket becoming a different supermaket is fairly commonplace? Agreed 100%. That said, ...

As I mention several posts up, it was definitely no later than the mid-to-late 1970s.

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor

Who remembers the now defunct mostly New England state based K-mart clones Bradlee's and Caldor? I think "clones" is the wrong word here. That's sort of like saying Safeway was an A&P clone just because they were both in the supermarket business. Bradlee's and Caldor were discount dep...

Del Farm (an inner city Chicago chain whose name they also used to rebanner stores when they dropped trading stamps). I was curious on my last visit about the Delray Farms stores I saw scattered around Chicago, mostly in what seemed to be old chain cast-off locations. They were a pretty junky lot, ...

Wrigley's was owned by Allied Supermarkets. FYI, there is also a good bit of discussion of the chain in the topic on Kmart Foods:

Re: 1970s Raley's decor?

I know you had the El Camino Avenue store listed in your Sacramento directory as last having been a Raley's some time around 1980...same deal for the West Sacramento location? I don't know the time frame; it didn't show up in the city directories I used for research. I only know for sure it was a R...

I can't answer the interior question, but I can confirm that the Broderick store is definitely an ex-Raleys.
