Re: "Grandma" at 125
The upstate NY stores in the New England Division probably got combined with the Waldbaum/Food Mart stores they bought. Food Mart was based in Springfield and if they kept their facilities or the old A&P-Springfield operation, it would have been a logical place to source some upstate NY stores. ...

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California
The store on Baldwin in Arcadia was a long running Sav-On and now subdivided into CVS and Aldi. It was a large store as a Sav-On with a wall running almost front to back on one side---that demarcated the health & beauty/Rx side from the liquor and general merchandise side. My guess is that it wa...

Re: Short-lived grocery stores
Often they were stores that came at the end of a chain's life or the end of one of it's operating units. Kroger opened some greenhouse stores in NE Ohio (Madison was one) and in western PA shortly before they exited the Cleveland/Western PA market. Giant Eagle opened and closed one of its Toledo sto...

Re: Did Safeway ever operate in Minnesota?
If you have access to old Moody's Industrial Manuals, they usually broke chains down into state by state store totals and in some years, Safeway was broken down by division.

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations
Cleveland area stores: #3562, 26100 Brush Road was a former Clarkins. It was abandoned for a number of years before KMart moved-in, probably in the 1980s. #7647, 16300 Lake Shore Blvd was a former Cooks (originally Uncle Bill's--ditto the store at 6801 Broadway); it was a relatively small store (pro...

Re: Red & White stores
Red & White has a complicated history and its difficult to know who has custody of what's left now. It was begun as a house brand for Flickinger which operated grocery stores in the Buffalo NY area and also served as a wholesaler for a wide area from its base in Buffalo. Flickinger was one of th...

National had a Division/Distribution center based in Duluth at least through the 60s. It was consolidated with Minneapolis and covered a huge area as far east as iron Mountain & Marquette.

HG Hill's stores were bought by Winn-Dixie (1956)
Canel Villere was bought by National somewhere in the late 60s. their original store was at the corner of Canal & Villere, hence the name.

Re: Detroit Sneak Preview
In the distant past, I've done various kinds of geographically-based estimates and distributions of various things---city directories were good for residential and multi-family (they would enumerate these well even if no one was identified as a resident/tenant) housing, but the commercial stuff coul...

You're missing some Farmer Jack (and possibly Food Fair locations)---it may be that they didn't provide complete info in their directory listings. They had a long running store that went up after the '67 riots on 12th Street/Rosa Parks, that you have only for 2003. They also had a store on Wyoming n...

Re: List of Detroit Metro Packer Foods stores from 1964
Livonia and Macomb malls opened in 1964, so it’s unlikely that these were low volume stores and the mall owners would not have wanted stores with a discount image which makes these locations odd. Packer was basically KMart Foods without the KMart next door. Perhaps they opened some new stores asPack...
