Visiting Charleston and Savannah

I'll be headed down there this week. Anyone know of anything I should see? By that, I mean relatively intact or recognizable old stores. As always, I don't particularly care about new ones...

Thanks,
David

Some locations: -- Lombard Street, San Francisco. In from of a motel whose name I don't remember. Was later a Baker's Square. -- Webster Street, Alameda. Connected to a motel there. I think it's a Chinese bufffet now. -- Blackstone Avenue near Shaw, Fresno. Now somebody's Country Kitchen. -- Aurora ...

I've read it. It did seem very much a vanity project, but there was some good information. Not a lot, though...

Actually, I think this was discussed earlier, either here or on the old board. This shopping center was originally a large White Front store, which encompassed the Longs, the former Service Merchandise, etc., and the Safeway was a Brentwood Market which had relocated from its original location acros...

This whole thread is getting me sort of nostalgic for a trip to a Kmart from, say, 1975, where we can all have cheeseburgers at the cafeteria, stick our hands through the plexiglass to look at 8-tracks, and then stand in line for half an hour while the cashiers tear off every price tag and put it in...

i remember them in the front of the stores here . they had a deli counter and some of the worst sub sandwiches you ever ate . The deli at the front was a whole different thing; the cafeteria-style operation in the back operated in addition to the front-end deli, which is also where the popcorn, etc...

Re: KMart Cafeteria?

I believe it was called the Kmart Grill, and while it was cafeteria-style, it was still pretty much fast food (burgers, sandwiches, salads, etc.) as I recall. But you're right; it was always in the back center. I think they may have stopped adding them to new stores as early as the mid-1970s; I seem...

(Further adding to the confusion, because I believe there was or is a supermarket chain called King's...? But this was King's Department Stores, which also went belly-up around '84.) There were probably several supermarket chains called King's scattered around; it's one of those common names like F...

And note that I don't think the Mammoth Mart mentioned above has any connection to the Mammoth Mart chain of discount (not food) stores that existed in New England in the 60s and 70s. I'm 100% certain there was no connection at all, and I wasn't trying to suggest that there was. The California inca...

Not among the very earliest, I guess, but also: -- Clark's Discount Department Stores, based in the midwest I believe, but also found in the south, had full-line grocery departments in the 1960s. Their stores were later sold to Cook's. -- Lucky-owned Gemco chain operated in California throughout the...

I beleive another A&P in the Covington Highway area had similar architecture. Like I said earlier, it reminds me of the former A&P at what used to be Westchester Mall in High Point NC. There's also a similar one, also a former A&P, on Albemarle Road in Charlotte which is now a Save-A-Lo...

Re: Gro Warehouse

Meanwhile one Super Saver still operates in NorCal in Woodland but does everything as the conventional NorCal Albertsons Stores do, including ads, uniforms, bags, etc. Nothing but the sign on the building (and a few banners on the stark walls) say Super Saver. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think t...

Re: Former KMart Foods

Seeing the pictures of the ex-KMart Foods reminded me of the Kroger in Kingsport, TN, obviously in a former KMart Foods. One of the last Krogers to open in Greensboro NC before they pulled out of the market was in a former Kmart itself (not the food part). For a while, I think it was the largest su...
