Re: End of an era: Curry Plaza demolished
It sounds like this site has been abandoned longer than it was occupied. That is certainly true of the Gloversville Loblaws which opened sometime in the mid 50's and closed in February of 1975 when they moved to a new store downtown. That building stood vacant for OVER 40 years-WOW! And one of the ...

Re: End of an era: Curry Plaza demolished
So, what other long abandoned stores are there in the greater area to target for 2018 demolition? ;)
After the Loblaw's about 15 months ago (in Johnstown), then this one, what gets to be Part III?

Re: Iconic Store Designs
I think the next style (which would probably be into the 1980's, since this was almost up to 1980) would be the "arched window" design? GU also used this design on their Big Star stores in the south. Makes sense that they would use a similar design, as we have seen other chains do with su...

Re: Iconic Store Designs
As for the later Grand Union you pictured, that is exactly the design I had in mind. The Milford, PA store was of that type. Do you know what the Milford store is today? I know it survived with the Grand Union name until at least 2010. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Key+Food/@41.326717,-74.81322...

Re: Iconic Store Designs
Here are unique designs by chain: Grand Union "60's shingle facade" stores... there also was a notable Grand Union facade design that I think was used in the late 70's and early 80's, but unfortunately I don't know its official name or timeline This one was built in 1977 - not sure if tha...

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s
Only in the past three years or so has Jo-Ann made an effort to replace the signs at older stores so that all the stores have the same logo, even though the current logo has been in use since at least the late 90's. So in the past few years, it's gotten harder to tell which stores were acquired fro...

Re: A&P stores in Maine in 1990s
I do not know, but certainly a possibility, especially in one of the smaller towns. After all, we had one location here in NY until 1997 (in an area where most had closed a decade plus earlier) and a couple in the northern part of the state held on even longer.

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s
Don't forget the store in Margaretville which actually hung on until only a few years ago. And yes I believe 1981 was really the last huge purge before things quieted down for a while because I recall the Gloversville store staying open until almost the end of that year which ended their presence l...

Re: A&P's closures and market withdrawals of the late 1970s and early 1980s
At least in this area of NY (Capital District/Albany area and further north), they did pull out of most of the market somewhere in this same time frame (1981 is often mentioned). However, they did have a couple oddities. In the greater Albany area, there was one store in a small town called Wynantsk...

Re: New location list: Albany through 1960
On that Stuyvesant Plaza store Billy Gr mentioned, yes it did open as an Acme in I'm going to say 1959. I found an article from 1962 a while ago which said that Acme sold the store to Golub Corp. which operated the Central Market chain and which we all know as Price Chopper today. The article impli...

Re: New location list: Albany through 1960
Interesting list. While I'm not old enough to go back to 1960 (as far as this goes) a couple things that may help: The 307 Central location was still a store (and known as Trading Port) into at least the 1980's, so I'd suspect that Trading Post was a misprint (and very well could be for other locati...

Re: Acme in New York
Acme closed 45 of 50 stores operating in New York in 1979. Stores remaining were Bath, Elmira, Hornell, Penn Yan, and Watkins Glen (served by Scanton,PA). Only NY Acme I was in was Bath in the late 70's. My family used to go to Mt. Morris 2 times a year and we did stop there. Memories are slim. Onl...

Key Foods
It was just posted via Supermarket News that Key Foods is acquiring the Superfresh banner from A&P.
I know there had been talk of them, but I thought it was for the Food Emporium name - seems odd to pick Superfresh as that name was not in the greater NY area (only PA/MD/DE and far southern NJ).

Re: New Acme/Acme Pharmacy opened in Philadelphia
The Sav-On name made sense in areas where Sav-On standalone pharmacies once operated because they were a well known and trusted name (especially in Southern California and Nevada). It never really made sense using it in markets where people didn't have any awareness to the brand. It's been so many ...

Re: New Acme/Acme Pharmacy opened in Philadelphia
There is now 175 Acme Markets opened. The ones converted from A&P, superfresh, and Pathmark that have pharmacies uses "Acme Pharmacy" on the buildings, and the legacy Acme that have pharmacies uses "Acme Sav-on Pharmacy" on their buildngs. All Acme ad uses "Acme Pharmac...
