Re: Rotating Kmart road signs
There were TONS of these out there. My first memories of Kmart involved the odd L shaped store in Danville, IL. It had the rotating K and the Plaza sign. It was at the top of a hill on N. Vermilion, so it was a focal point that you just didn't miss. Later in life, we moved to Texas, and the Tyler st...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
The Lafayette stores were closed along with all the stores in Baton Rouge area (excluding Lake Charles, Alex and Shreveport area) stores in a contract dispute in the early 80's. The Lafayette and Baton Rouge stores were part of the Houston Division. The stores that closed included Baton Rouge, Lafa...

Re: Camas, WA Safeway Question
In looking at Historic Aerials, the original Camas store was replaced around 1990. It sat in what is now the parking lot of the existing store. There is a 1990 image of the site that shows both buildings, with the current one under construction at the time. This was definitely not uncommon for Safew...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
The former Adrien's Supermarket at 3540 Pinhook in Lafayette may have been a former Delchamp's. The Shopper's Value Foods in Baton Rouge was a former Delchamp's store and the shopping center has a similar layout to the former Adrien's in Lafayette. Shoppers Value Foods https://www.google.com/maps/@...

Re: Kmart 2000 closures
Somewhat ironically, a lot of former Venture stores became Kmart also around 1997, and Venture was a VERY similar chain to Clover. Even more ironic is that Venture was originally a May Company creation, but Clover went out of business because its parent company Strawbridge & Clothier sold out t...

Re: 10748 Buckley Hall Rd, Mathews, VA
Using Google Maps' legend as a guide, this store is only roughly about 110'x120'. That makes it around 13,200 sq. ft. I would say based on that and its appearance as a prefab metal building in a very small town, it may very well have been built for its current occupant. It doesn't look like any majo...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
I am aware that the list is not 100% accurate (there were some oddities in trying to look up things in Houston). Looks like Caffery Center (4510 Ambassador Caffery) had a K&B Drug in the center as well which if it was built in 1997 didn't last too long before it became Rite Aid (which it is tod...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
A couple of items of note: Adrien's Supermarkets. Adrien's still operates one store (they had as many as three concurrently) on West Congress, but another operated at the time of this list at 3540 Pinhook. That store looks and is laid out similarly to a Delchamps, but I've never been able to find ev...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
Let me break this one into three. First, Kroger left Lafayette around the same time they left Opelousas (1st gen center Greenhouse) and Baton Rouge, roughly 1984. I recently discovered a list of grocery stores in Lafayette from the 1990s which revealed that there had been three Delchamps in Lafayette...

Re: Reset conversions vs. Rebrand conversions
"Rebrand" Conversions - The store is slowly converted over to the new brand. Usually décor does not change, perishable programs change over time, and employees generally keep their jobs. The store is ultimately re-flagged over the course of a few weeks or months. "Reset" Convers...

Re: Which Chicagoland supermarket suffered the most under new ownership?
Seessel's was a bit different for a few reasons--it was the only Albertsons owned store (well, mainlane store anyway, if you include Max Foods) before 2002 that was actually branded as "Seessel's by Albertsons", indicating that would be the name for that store even if Jewel and ACME had b...

Re: Which Chicagoland supermarket suffered the most under new ownership?
I ask because the Lucky stores in California were dramatically altered, and in the late 1990s, there were a number of other stores that Albertsons picked up and converted (without closing) that were very different from the Albertsons format--upscale Memphis retailer Seessel's, the Iowa stores of wa...

Re: Safeway in NC
I know this is an insanely old thread, but I found the answer for one of these locations today: Goldsboro Look at 2539 E Ash St, Goldsboro, NC on Google Maps. There's even a circle cutout on the right side of the building in brick. There are also emergency exits on either end of the front glass, a S...

Re: The use of mercury vapor lighting in store interiors
The mercury vapor lighting had two major advantages over traditional fluorescent lighting. First, fluorescent lights require two components: bulb and ballast. In this system, the ballast boosts the power to the bulb to create light. Often, the ballast goes out before the bulb, thus requiring an elec...

Re: Eisner and the downstate Jewel stores
Eisner was based out of Champaign. Similar to Walgreens, you could franchise your own 'Eisner Agency' store. There were many of these in the smaller Central Illinois and Indiana towns, as Jewel had spread as far east as Indianapolis during the Turn Style days, combining them in a similar fashion as ...
