Oklahoma City Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1930-2015

Last updated on 11 June 2025.

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Oklahoma City between 1930 and 2015, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes

  • Kroger owned the Sipes Self-Serving and Piggly Wiggly stores in Oklahoma City (but apparently not the ones in Tulsa) in 1930 and seems never to have operated under its own name there.
  • Both chains were sold to Safeway around 1935 and were consolidated with the existing Skaggs Safeway chain in operation there.
  • Humpty Dumpty and Standard Food Stores were apparently related to each other and to the Goldman Bros. chain.
  • A&P apparently did not fare well in Oklahoma City, exiting after less than a decade.

Went to the old location for 6022 S Western, and noticed the arched ceiling. Immediately knew this was an old Safeway. Now a Cocino de Mino restaurant.
