I grew up in the Farmington Township area and went to school at Edgewood (1st) and Our Lady of Sorrows (old school (2 & 3 grade) across Grand River from the LaSalle Winery – we could smell the grapes being dumped and crushed in the fall. The old school was demolished and became a strip mall.) I then went to Our Lady of Sorrows’ new school near the church for 4th Grade. The old church had a ‘pieta’ donated my the C F Smith Family. The CF Smith family had a huge estate on Grand River west of Drake Road. I remember it well and as family, we’d mention it in the car ‘often’. Now, there was a C F Smith store on the corner of Ontago and Eight Mile Road Just west of Inkster Rd. I remember it well as I would be there ‘often’ getting items for my mother who baked every Tuesday and I was her ‘running’ oldest son. I do remember dropping ‘dollar bills’ that marked my ‘trail’ home from the store and some ‘neighbor’ followed me home and gave them to my mother. Oh, memories … they are ‘precious’.
