Two smaller towns for your Tuesday night:
Gardner Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1926-1965
Gloucester Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1926-1993
A little extra on Gloucester from the Gloucester Daily Times archives:
https://sawyer.advantage-preservation.com/
The Finast at 127 Eastern Ave closed in August 1980. In May 1981 an IGA opened at that location with the same owner as the Rockport IGA, but it closed just a few months later in September. In 1982 a Cape Ann Market opened at the location. This was a small local chain that also had stores at 7 Railroad Ave in Gloucester and 146 High St in Ipswich. In 1995 the Cape Ann Market chain was bought by Star Market, and then presumably the stores became Shaw's after they bought Star.
The Cape Ann Market at 7 Railroad Ave opened in 1966 or 67, prior to that it was located at 36 Washington St.
There was also a very long-running saga over a never-built Demoulas in West Gloucester:

The city eventually won in court, but it wasn't fully settled until the deal that allowed for the current Market Basket to be built elsewhere in the city in 2008.
