This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Sacramento between 1924 and 1980, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

May 8, 2019 at 6:26pmYou never mentioned INKS ( think that changed to Van’s), Pantry (not Handy Pantry) Thriftway Market, Mar Val market (in Rio Linda, I guess that’s not Sacramento), Rainbow Market (North Sacramento), Arcade Market (North Sacramento)

January 28, 2022 at 12:10amHi there, Ralphs came to Sacramento in May of ’76 – 3 stores. Closed in July (?) of ’78. I literally locked the doors at the last store because they closed them sequentially that day so payroll could cut checks to everyone. The Florin Rd (65th and Florin #722) was the last to close.
There was one at Arden and Watt (#721), and one at Greenback and San Juan (#723).
They sold to Patterson’s (Joe and Bruce). They had run Farmer’s I believe. They made it a college of years and sold to Holiday from Cottonwood (Redding area). Circle H was the brand they used. Later became the Pak N’ Save stores owned by Safeway.
Love your tweets, that where I see most of your stuff.

Another victim of auto-correct.
Thanks.
