Louisville Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1922-2022

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Louisville between 1922 and 2022, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

  • Louisville city directories did not publish individual chain store locations between 1922 and 1946.
  • Steiden Stores was established by a former manager of the Louisville Clarence Saunders stores, and was acquired by Winn & Lovett (later Winn-Dixie) in 1945.
  • Park & Shop was an Indianapolis chain that expanded to Louisville in 1955. It was briefly owned by Colonial Stores (1955-1959) but was resold to its original owners and was defunct by 1962.
