Hagerstown Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1922-2021

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Hagerstown between 1922 and 2021, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

  • Hagerstown is the hometown of Martin’s (later part of Giant-Carlisle). The first Martin’s supermarket is long gone, sadly.
  • Grand Union apparently entered the market through the purchase of H.L. Mills Super Market.
  • The 1958 Food Fair at 1505 Potomac was likely part of the Grand Union-owned chain based in the Washington DC rather than the larger chain.
