This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Battle Creek between 1926 and 2019, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.
View and download a copy of this location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.
Notes:
- A major renumbering/renaming occurred between 1926 and 1931. Some 1926 numbers are approximate.
- Unfortunately, I am missing data for 1965, which looks like it would be very interesting, particularly with respect to National.
Store tags:
- A&P
- Dole’s
- Felpausch
- IGA
- Kroger
- Meijer
- National

January 18, 2020 at 10:41amI think the current Family Fare store at the Urbandale Plaza in Battle Creek, Michigan, may have been a Meijer supermarket (not Thrifty Acres), maybe until 1976-77, when they moved to their then-new West Columbia Avenue elsewhere in town.

February 27, 2024 at 10:20pmPerhaps it’s not a chain, and maybe I missed it on the list, but, Hamady (Hamady’s?) was at a few locations, after Kroger? Like at s. end of Columbia Plaza (now Ollie’s), at Goodale site….

February 28, 2024 at 8:10amYou are correct. I missed them because they were only open from about 1980 to 1982, but I was able to confirm them using newspapers and I have added a note about them. Thanks!
