This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Flint between 1925 and 1989, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

• The numbering system for streets outside the city limits of Flint over the past 70-80 years or so defies all logic, with its “G” prefixes and random dropping of directional indicators. I did a lot of map and directory research and I think I’m about as close as anyone could be on most of this.
• That said, a good part of the built environment in Flint is no longer standing, which made it a little harder. A lot of old supermarket buildings have survived, though.
• I’ll detail the progression from Kroger to Kessel and back to Kroger (with detours via Hamady Bros) at some later date, but not tonight.
